It has been an ordinary day for Nellie Lachlan. If you can call living in a place like this ordinary that is. Nothing particularly bad has happened, and nothing particularly wonderful either. It's just a day. One of many that she will spend in Chicago.

She's thankful that Josef gave her a job, because it gives her something to do. She's still figuring it out and trying not to mess up, but she likes it. She observes a lot while she's there. She watches the people who come and go, she watches her boss and co-workers, all to get a better idea of her own place there. Of her place in Chicago.

Which isn't to say she's always quiet when she's working. She isn't. She talks to people, and she's friendly, and she tries to enjoy herself. She learned a long time ago how to be a socialite.

When she leaves work tonight her mind isn't in any one particular place. She obviously notices the weight that has been over Chicago lately, because it would be impossible not to. She has also been homesick, but she isn't sure what for exactly. There is a lot at home that she doesn't want to go back to, and a few things she does. The one thing from home that weighs on her the heaviest lately is Ben and how much she misses him. In a way he had always been more prominent in her life than Daddy. He had been her constant. Without him to turn to she's finding she has to turn to herself more, and she can't decide if she likes that or not. She still trusts him more than she trusts herself. She finds it easier, preferable even, to have him to believe in over herself. At the bottom of it all she doesn't believe in herself and it scares her to even try.

Nellie walks back to the Kashtta tonight and thinks about home, about Chicago, and about everything stuck in between.
