Who is wearing the other cuff that will keep you chained to Sam's side all day? It could be your character!
The handcuffs are magically Rift-altered, the narration must warn. Nearly nothing will set them free.
Not to mention, Sam's Rift ability is finally kicking into gear, and his hand keeps stretching to an impossible length.

"C'mon, Sam! Can't be that hard to pick a lock," she almost whines. She isn't trying to be rude, but this is frustrating, and when frustrated she tends to act like a child. It's not that she minds being attached to big, tall, and handsome so much as being attached to anyone.

"It should've worked already, and it won't. I don't know if it's the Rift or what but... nothing works."
Reply
"Oh trust me, it's the Rift. Has to be on April Fools Day. You shoulda seen Christmas and Valentine's Day." Her eyes are on the lock as he works on it. She would offer tips, but her rebellion stages never had much to do with breaking and entering.

Sam glances over at her. He hadn't fallen through the Rift in time to see any of the Christmas and Valentine's Day shenanigans, but he can just imagine them.
"What'd it do?"
Reply
She does smirk a bit at the question, though. "Usual anything can happen thing, I guess. There was mistletoe you couldn't escape, gumdrops rainin' down, all kinds of things like that for Christmas. And Valentine's Day had people actin' all crazy, too. Me? I made a few dozen handmade Valentines and was out handin' them out to people." She can almost laugh about it now. Almost. "Oh, and as little me, not as myself."

And he's only been here for weeks, give or take. Sam lifts his knee up to his chest and listens to her. "That's kind of cute," he says, about her child self handing out cards. The rest is pretty crazy, but he doesn't think to disbelieve her. He's seen what this place is capable of. "How long do the effects usually last for?"

She isn't used to being the person who knows more about the workings and happenings of Chicago, even though she doesn't know everything. Having Sam ask her about it might always be strange. She gives a half shrug and crosses her legs over each other. They must be on a bench somewhere, because her face tilts to catch the sun with it's careful hints of Spring. She's going to ignore the cute comment.
"Well...Valentine's Day was just the day. Christmas was the whole holiday season. I guess it depends on the holiday, ya know? Or what the Rift wants. Kinda weird to think if the Rift chooses things consciously or just does them..." She gets a little lost in that thought, whether it makes sense out loud or not, it's something for her to consider.

He's good at shoving that back down, though. It's instinct to do so. To shove it far down, in a deep corner where it cannot be reached, and so Sam focuses on what she's saying. He didn't mean anything by the cute comment save to be nice, so ignoring it or acknowleding it is okay with him.
There's concern and then there's understanding. "I'm not sure. Some say there's no rhyme or reason to it, but some things are too well thought out to be random. I've been researching as much as I can but... nothing conclusive yet."
Reply
And whether he meant anything by it or not doesn't even factor to her. She appreciates his kindness, and files it away with the good things in life to think about. There is a special folder for nice guys who think her seven year old Rift self is cute.
She raises a brow a bit at that. "How do you research it?"
Reply
People might look at them weird and that will embarrass him a little, but what's the alternative?
"It depends. Usually there's lore or information I can look up. The Rifts aren't well-documented, so the best you can do is ask around to locals or Wanderers who have been here for longest. They usually know how it works."
Reply
The alternative would be to sit there and starve, and Nellie would personally prefer the embarrassment.
"Yeah, that's kinda what I've been relyin' on so far. Have you met a lot of these people to talk to? I really would like to learn more about it sometime."
Reply
"Let's hope the Rift didn't mess with it."
Hey, anything is possible.
"I've met some of them. The Tower's always got people busy with making sure it's running and they don't always have the time, but if there's any question I can answer for you, I'll try my best."
Reply
"Oh boy. Mess with it? Now I'm not so sure I should risk it."
She nods at that. "Yeah, there's lot's of people there in general. Always seems everyone knows somethin'. And...thanks. I appreciate it."
She leads the way after where she thinks she saw said wienermobile go.

It doesn't translate well when he tries, for some reason. Sam and humor haven't been on friendly terms for... oh, all of his life, really.
"It's no problem. Glad to help where I can."
There will be a very, very tall puppy following in tow.

Then, she huffs for a while, and complains, and then eventually comes acceptance.
Now? She's just watching Sam's hand with an odd kind of confusion. And trying not to think about the possiblities with handcuffs with the tall cute guy she happens to be attached to. Sam's rift ability is a pretty good distraction on that front.
She also has a hot dog. Thanks, strange guy in a wenier mobile.
"So is this an example of one of those rift change thingies?"
