Truth be told, Iris is just as scared of seeing Lola as Lola is of seeing her. She'd said-- well, intimated, the actual details struck through in a last-minute change of heart-- that it wouldn't make any difference if Lola saw her mutilated wings, that she had little to hide from one who already knew.

But in her heart of hearts, Lola knowing is still different frm Lola seeing. She'd been overwhelmed with joy when her friend had first run across her in the corridors of the Kashtta, newly-winged and full of pride. She doesn't want Lola's image of her now to be of the pathetic creature she's become, her features drawn with emotional exhaustion, her one wing torn savagely from her back ( ... )

Something in her stomach drops as she enters the room. Lola doesn't want to, but it's hard not to look at her wings; her poor, beautiful wings. There's a rush of emotions that don't show on her face. There's rage and loathing - these people are no better than Franco's swine she fought so hard against back home. They almost seem worse. No. They are worse. She doesn't think Franco's men would ever do anything like this.

And then, she feels shattered. Almost like someone's cut a part of her away. They both had their dreams of getting their wings - being the people they'd always wanted to be, the people they both would one day become. It was something they shared. But at this attack, the mutilation of her wings - she feels like part of their dream has been stolen ( ... )

Iris isn't expecting the hug, focused in so much on Lola's pained expression that by the time the younger girl's arms are around her, she's only just registered she moved. She hugs her back-- stiffly at first, her body tensing at any touch she hasn't initiated, wary of Lola's hands inadvertently brushing her scars. But she can feel the sincerity and caring in her friend's embrace, and soon finds herself sinking into it, hugging Lola back with two arms, one wing, and just as much fervour.

"Thank you," is all she can croak for a while, hoping the sheltering embrace of her soft feathers, her periodic stroking hands on Lola's back, will do the work of conveying her feelings. Lola doesn't know it, but with her simple act, the naked outrage and compassion that showed in her words, she's done more to console Iris than anyone has in a long while. She understands. She doesn't have to say anything for Iris to know that. She knows what this meant to Iris, what it meant to them, and she feels the pain of something beautiful torn away ( ... )

This will be happy at some point dammit. Lola does not want to leave Iris with all of the sad. :< therebelruns March 19 2011, 19:34:03 UTC
Lola holds onto her friend tightly. The fact she's hugging back feels like a good sign. Even if it is a little hesitant at first. She tries not to touch her wings. She respects the whole non-touching of wings rule - but if she might accidentally brush them - it's completely an accident which she'll be very sorry for ( ... )

She lets herself get lost in that affirmation. How can they not see this? How good you are? How good this is? They're the words she's been waiting to hear, it seems, her whole life: how can anyone not see this is right for you? That starts her crying again, though whether from sorrow, joy or some third, foreign emotion, she's not wholly sure. She feels empty and aching, warm and secure. She feels like she'll never come back to herself. She feels like she's home. So many thoughts, and so weak of a grasp of how to reconcile them, how to describe anything she's feeling right now. She just wants to sob into Lola forever. It's the only thing she feels like she knows how to do any more ( ... )

Lola feels bad at first for making her cry harder. She doesn't want to make her friend unhappy. But then she can hear something else in her sobbing. Something not quite sorrowful, but there's something almost happy. And she listens to the sounds, glad that there's a glimmer of joy. It tells here that all is not lost with her friend. There is hope ( ... )

She doesn't believe it, deep in her heart of hearts. It's the way things should work, but she's long since learnt that Chicago cares nothing for the way things should work. Everything here is warped, horrible and wrong. There's no rhyme or reason to the structure of things, no way to predict what will bear your weight and what will collapse out from under you when you venture to put your faith in it. It's chaos ( ... )

Lola nods as she repeats her words, noting the way it brings more tears to her eyes. She bites down on her lower lip and says nothing for a momements. She hopes she'll see that, that she will heal - that she'll push past this. That she'll find strength and can be just as powerful and free as the day she saw her with her wings.

She smiles at the question and looks down for a few moments. She has been thinking about it a lot recently. Her fifteenth birthday's in just under a month's time. She'll only have another twelve months after that until she gets her wings. "Yes," she says finally, "I am counting down the days. I'll be changing around April 5th, 2012,"

She pauses again at the second question, she does wonder what she'll be when she does change. Her mother told her somethings about changing, my Calling or Papa's Calling can influence it. Like genes, like how you have Papa's smile. But it is also something you must craft too, the person you are now will reflect in your wings. But since coming to Chicago, she's changed. Had she ( ... )
