Sonny goes off on tangents often. It is good that she has recognized these moments so she can know when to sit back and be amused basically. Ahem.

"Hey, I try. Thank you for the appreciation. More people should get on board with thanking me with all the good words of wisdom I hand out all the time. People are just ungrateful."

Yes, he knows that was sarcastic. He is casually acting as though he didn't.

It's smart to not poke that particular fire even if it will come for you one way or another. It's true.

"Hey, the more detailed the threat, the more people believe it to be true and get the fuck out when you need them to," Sonny says with a smirk. "Hey, whoever doesn't order in say an hour can get kicked out. This is not a place to make out. It's a place to drink and make out."

Sonny looks over at her, and there's seriousness. It hits him fast, but it's not an easy conversation. He knows what people risk when they work for him. He knows it ended up with six of them dead in a fire, god knows what happened to them before the fire. He shakes his head, and there's a sad, almost smile on his face. "You make it sound real simple."

Jo snorts softly and points at him. "Long as you remember you gave me permission to toss them out," Jo says, not that she really needs anyone's permission to do something and if people annoyed her badly enough she'd find a way to drive them out regardless but--

It's nice to have the boss's approval, alright?

Jo studies him thoughtfully, leaning against the bar. The sad smile reaches a part of her that often remains very hidden. It's the part of her that was once a girl in pigtails, waiting for her father who never came home.

"Maybe 'cause it is that simple, Sonny," she asys quietly. "It ain't easy, far from it, but it's simple. You have something to do, and you get it done, no matter what it takes."

The rest, in her opinion, is people complicating themselves.

"I will definitely remember that. Look I don't want my bar turning into a cesspool and breeding ground for babies and STDs. I think people can handle getting kicked out for a sickening amount of PDA," Sonny says with a smirk, knowing that she doesn't really need the permission if someone annoyed her badly enough.

However, he is giving her stipulations this time which would give her more reason to kick someone out if she wanted. Sometimes he's nice and... giving.

"I don't know that I've ever viewed it as being simple, any of it. Sometimes knowing what to do is the problem. Sometimes you've got five fuckin' things to do and a good chunk of those things contradicts each other," Sonny says, and he shakes his head allowing the sad smile to fall for the time being.

Not many people ever get to see it. If everyone wasn't too busy playing tonsil hockey to notice it, he wouldn't have allowed it out in the middle of the bar.

Not many people get to see the softer side of Jo either, Sonny, so consider yourself a snowflake. She doesn't make mention to the rarity of the moment, and she knows he won't either. Some things just aren't spoken of, and it's a hunter thing, too.

"Sometimes making a mess is unavoidable. Sometimes you gotta walk straight trhough the fire to get to the other side. But you know, all you can do at that point is follow your gut," Jo says, and it's one thing she's learned as she becomes a hunter. She'll get advice left and right, and some of it may be far wiser than what she ends up doing--but she has to trust her instincts.

If she's wrong, she's wrong, but she can't trust anybody else's.

"So..." Insert smirk here. "What, Sonny, no Valentine?"

Aw, kids! The narration loves them so much. He knows that the softer side of Jo is not seen by many either. They won't mention it because they both know.

He looks up at her when she speaks, and his hand slides behind his neck for a moment. "Yeah, I know it. There's no rulebook." And he has made mistakes before following his gut but there's nothing else to do especially in a place like this. It's good to have the reminder anyway.

They all have to be the kind that will go with their gut because doubt gets you killed even faster, but he cannot help remembering that wreckage after the fire, how maybe if he'd done something different they wouldn't have ended up dead. It makes doubt. It complicates things in a way they weren't before.

Sonny snorts, rolling his eyes. "What about you, Harvelle? Where's your special male friend on a night like tonight?" Eyebrow raise of knowing. "Anyway, if I had one Valentine, the rest of the city would be jealous. It's a thing. Gotta take myself off the market completely to keep from breaking too many hearts. You understand."

Once you start doubting yourself more than you believe in yourself, it's easier to make those mistakes all over again instead of learning from them. She doesn't add more than what she already said, though. She wasn't there for that kind of loss, and every loss is different. Every hunt, so to speak, is different. He's the only one who knows what's best for him and his.

The smirk widens on her face at his reaction.

"Special male friend. You make it sound like he's some sort of escort service, Christ." She thinks you know nothing, Sonny! At least when it comes to her... whatevership. Ahem.

Now it's Jo's turn to roll her eyes, easy as it is to spot the amusement. "Sure, that's real thoughtful of you. I'm sure everyone's relieved they don't have to fight for a piece of ya."

She is smart, and he knows there is wisdom in what she says, but at the end of the day, it is never so simple for him as doing what needs to be done. Sonny wouldn't want it to be the same for her.

He never wants her to doubt her instincts like he has, because it's easier to make those mistakes.

Sonny snorts at her reaction, smirking at her. He will always believes he knows all, okay? "No, not an escort service. It's a male friend of yours that's special to you. Just what it says on the tin."

He is still smirking at her and raising an eyebrow as if he has no fucking clue why she'd roll her eyes at the truth. "Hey, I have to do what I can to ease the fighting in this city, okay? Whether that's the missions or taking myself off of the list of candidates for Valentines day. Chicago has a lot to thank me for here. Lots of personal sacrifice, etcetera etcetera."

"I've no doubt you'll get a plaque for your generosity someday, Sonny," Jo says, and of course he has no idea why she'd be rolling her eyes. She listens to him, snorting once more, and then she shakes her head and clears the counter from the chocolates that materialized a while ago.

At least the day's half-over. In comparison with other people, she got out of it relatively unscathed. "Now if you'll excuse me..."

The couple has been swapping spit for over an hour and they have not been ordering anythign to drink. Since Sonny gave her permission, Jo unties the cloth from her waist and tosses it onto the counter as she slips out of it.

She'll be tossing them out by the ear now, oh yeah.
