David recognizes Lola. Although monsters scare the hell out of him, his protective instinct takes over and he rushes forward. His wings slide out of his back, and it is the first time they have done that since... since he got in a fist fight with his father so not long.

He reaches for her arm in an attempt to pull her out of the way, carry her if he has to to safety.

Unfortunately, he has no weapon of his own so he can't really distract the beast without being seriously injured, but he is faster than Lola would be if she ran on her own, especially with his wings out. His instinct is to run. It is always to run.

Lola catches the blur of blonde hair at her side, but she can't afford to look anywhere else but forward - scared it'll make her trip and fall, or cause her to run into something. Her heart thuds in her chest, a familar feeling of terror and courage at once.

"David?!" she allows the smallest of looks just to be sure. She's in awe to see his wings out, but she must allow herself to be distracted by it.

"I need to reload!" she shouts in between pants, grabbing his hand, "We must not allow this thing to go near anyone!"

"Yes, it's me. I've got you," David manages to say through the sheer panic rushing through him and tightening his chest to the point that it's difficult to breathe. "We'll--"

He groans and winces at her answer, trying to pull her to the side as the monster dives toward them.

"I should have known you would say that," he mutters, rubbing a hand over his face. In his heart, he knows that she is right. There are many people threatened by that monster. It is what he must do, what he must believe as a guardian, but it is so difficult for him to fight through his fear.

Lola looks at him briefly with an encouraging look, she notes the hesitation, "We can do this," she calls to him. She feels the pull on her arm and moves with it. She is not going to be bear-food today.

She continues to run as hard as she can to keep up, making short leaps as she does over branches and the small patches of icy snow that remain on the earth. She feels like she's back home, running through the Spanish forests - running to help, to save people.

"Listen!" she's managed to think of a plan, her voice is broken between her pants. "We find a strong enough tree, run toward it. At the last minute, we split up and go round a side each. If the demon is stupid enough, it might run straight into it, and get knocked out,"

She's looking around for a tree as she speaks, "Good plan?"

David bites down on his lip, and he can't believe that again, a girl so much younger than him is trying to give him confidence. He nods, because he wants to be brave. He has to be in this city to survive.

"We can," he agrees, and he doesn't know how but he believes it.

The plan is as good as any other.

"Yeah, it's... our only hope," he says, breathing out and sprinting for the nearest tree that he can find and forcing himself not to jump away from the tree until he has no other choice. It's hard, because he wants to jump away sooner but he knows instinctively that it's too soon.

Lola offers him a firm, encouraging grin and nods her head. She tries to pick up a faster pace, but it's a struggle given how long she's been running for. Her stamina's almost gone. As they head towards the tree, she begins counting, waiting for the right moment. They have to be careful, or it won't work.

"Now!" she shouts at the last second, letting go of his hand as they each jump out the way and rush around a side of the tree. The bear demon doesn't realize fast enough what's happening and ends up smacking into the tree. The bark snaps and breaks in half and the demon falls to the ground, knocked out.

Lola skids to a halt, wrenching her bag from her shoulders and quickly searching for more bullets. Reloading, she carefully approaches and aims. She shoots it in the head a few times, checking it's dead and steps away. Without saying another world, she grins at David and flops down on the ground, panting heavily. "Thank you! You did great!" she says breathlessly.

David pushes himself up and stares at the corpse of the monster on the other side of the tree. He only walks forward when she does. After all, she has the gun, and he does not. If the monster ends up being not dead, he'd have no way to defend himself from it.

He glances at her when she drops to the floor and then he smiles a little.

"Hey, no problem. It needed to die, and I couldn't... leave you to be eaten," he says, hand running through his hair a little worriedly still. "You were... really great too. Did you grow up fighting monsters or something?"

Not that she's even completely grown up yet, which is part of what's so amazing.

Here he is, nineteen and taking advice from her on how to get rid of monsters.

Lola grins back at him, "I have made it this far without being eaten, I think I am doing well," she says breathlessly with a small laugh, "But thank you for being around just to make sure,"

She shifts her head look across at her rifle lying on grass beside her. She raises her eyebrows in thought, it does seem like it. But it's on the contrary. Before she came through the rift, she'd only shot a few rabbits for food - but that's it.

"Not at all," she says, shaking her head, "There were no monsters back home, other than Franco's men," She's frowns for a moment, "The only monsters were in my storybooks. And they ate people and did bad things, and now they are real - the only thing to do is stop them,"

Lola smiles impishly, "Have you been fighting any monsters without me?"
