you'll wake up and find out you're alone. [open]

Truth be told, Sirius Black never expected to see anything outside of Azkaban again. For nearly three years, he's seen nothing but himself, the Dementors, and the occasional prisoner passing in and out. He's heard nothing but the screams and cries of other prisoners.

He's hoped, of course. The dementors do what they can do erase every happy memory Sirius has ever had, but in his dog form, he can believe in some sort of escape, someday. There's some shred of hope that he'll get out, that he'll make things right - somehow. That he'll find Pettigrew and rip him apart for the pain he's caused.

Some nights make it more difficult to believe than others. He's having the same nightmare, reliving the same memory of the night that his two best friends died. He gets to their home in Godric's Hollow too late again, always too late. He cries out in his sleep, but when he wakes up, he's -

Azkaban is gone. Everything and everywhere he was just moments ago is gone. There are no dementors, no screaming prisoners. Nothing but the sound of early morning traffic meets his ears.

Sirius Black is now crouched on an unfamiliar street corner, dressed in ragged wizard's robes, looking around himself in utter disbelief.
