Well I keep everything inside so long till it burns...

Des is in his room and he was sleeping off the drugs and the pain in his chest from that little event, but somehow sleep is failing him and the drugs are starting to wear off, which might have something to do with why sleep is failing him, but the fact that his mind is racing right now might also have something to do with it.

He died. He actually ( Read more... )

It's probably a good thing the door is unlocked.

Because if it weren't, Kara would have broken it down without a second thought. She was perfectly willing to leave him alone when he was sleeping, but now that he's not...

There's a girl standing in his open doorway, her arms crossed over her chest, glowering at him in that "you have no idea how much trouble you re in" look. This is the glare that has made nightmares whimper and cower, albeit in another universe.

Actually, come to think of it, the word "trouble" doesn't begin to describe where Des is right now, unless he starts apologizing very, very quickly.

That look scares him and he's seen lots of scary things in his life to know what scary really is. There is a look on his face that most people don't see often, because Des doesn't often cower in fear at much of anything, but he kinda wants to right now, even though cowering would involve moving in ways he rather doesn't want to move.

Oddly enough, so would running away. Not that it would help.

"Kara," he squeaks out, because he knows why she's here and why she's pissed (he didn't make it a habit to tell people about what happened and if Martha did, it's her choice, but no one needs to tell her anything). He's not that stupid.

He'll get to the apologizing when his voice comes back.

She stays absolutely still in the doorway for a moment longer, just watching him. She wants to hit him. But hitting and Kara don't go well together since she came through the Rift and lost all sense of just how strong she really is, and she doesn't want to break his neck or anything. Scaring him half to death will have to do.

"I felt you die," she says after a minute or so, distantly, accusingly. Felt isn't so much the right word, though. She lived him dying, just as much as if it were her who'd been shot. She just doesn't have the wounds to show for it.

And here comes the guilt on top of the fear. He manages to tear his face away from hers and smack his head against the headboard either accidentally or intentionally- hard to tell, honestly- his eyes fixating on the ceiling again before he closes them tightly.

What do you say to that? I'm sorry you felt me die just sounds so... Hokey. And it doesn't convey the sheer amount of sorry he feels for it. He's not a big expert on psychics, but the sheer concept of feeling someone- especially if it was someone you cared about- die is just... Horrific.

He finally does manage a rather feeble, but still utterly sincere, "I'm sorry" despite it not being good enough as far as he's concerned. "I'm really sorry."

She takes a little step into the room, still trying to glare, but it's tempered with fear and the echoes of darkness. She died once already, rather horribly, and still has nightmares about it - few things still give Kara nightmares. She did not need to feel the death of someone whose mind she's so tightly bound up in.

"I didn't see... It wasn't supposed to... It was the wrong one."

She should have see it coming. Not as a definite thing, but at least the possibility of it, but there was nothing. She knows how he was meant to die, and it's not like this... but then, that's the problem with all the wanderers. Their futures are all wrong, and they cloud over everything she's supposed to see.

He turns back to look at her, still fighting to find the right words.

"Yeah, I know," is all he gets out. And even if he didn't know he was fated to die at some very near point in his own world, he'd still have said those same words, because he needs to die there- where his death will have some meaning, because that was the whole point of the curse. Somehow dying here, for anyone doesn't carry the same weight as it would there. There's not as much at stake nor is there a war over his soul.

It's easy to think like that now, however. Where are those thoughts when there's danger and he's not concerned about what's supposed to be as much as he's concerned by what is"I didn't want to scare you," he adds, sitting up a bit and wincing as it hurts his chest just a bit. "I didn't mean for that to happen." He chuckles, but it's a hollow sound. "I'm just... Yeah, sorry. You shouldn't have had to go through that ( ... )

"Doesn't change that you're a ninny," she says after a moment of thought. Because we all knew that was coming sooner or later. She says it with a glare, and manages to look like she's not still trying to convince herself that yes, her heart is beating, and so is his. "You could have at least get yourself eaten by a monster. I could even get one for you. It would be much more dramatic."

There's a smile, because even if she's glaring at him, even if she's still scary as hell right now, he can't help but smile at that.

"I don't think Martha could have brought me back from that," he says, not teasingly, but still just a bit lighter than everything else he's been saying. "And you still want me around, don't you? Even if I'm a ninny."

He's moved past apologies and gone right for the try to be charming and hope that saves your bacon phase. If it doesn't... He'll start sulking like a kicked puppy, barring all other options.

He's not really sure how well any of that will work on her and it's sort of tactless for him to even try, but you'll have to forgive him that.

It usually wouldn't work on Kara. Normally, she'd smack him on the back of the head and scold him like a puppy, but just now...

This time, he gets a break, because he's just died and even with him sitting right there... Well. Kara knows she's crazy, and she needs to reassure herself that he's not a dream, or an illusion.

So she wavers for about two point five seconds before running towards the bed and pouncing on him - perhaps a bit too hard, considering the shape he's in, but it's not going to kill him, so he can deal with it.

And there's quite a bit of pain associated with that action, but he can deal with it even through the brief whimpers of pain, because... She's not glaring at him anymore and that's extremely good news as far as he's concerned.

"If it's any consolation, Kara," he says, letting out a deep breath and wincing a little. "I won't be doing that again."

What he means is that he won't get shot and not 'completely cease doing things that might get him shot,' but it's the best anyone's going to get out of a stubborn old fool like him.

Kara curls up and sort of burrows against his chest - though she's avoiding the wound now, because hurting him when she's in his head (which she always is when it comes to Descant) is just a bad idea - still clinging to him like her last lifeline.

"It's not. You're still stupid." But she tilts her head up and kisses his cheek - or rather, his jawline - before resting her head against his shoulder again. "Don't make me hold your hand when you go out. I will."

And if Kara is with a person and doesn't want them hurt, they don't. Get. Hurt. She might get injured in their place, but...
