Corpses in the Rift Room.

Mar 27, 2008 07:50

Jack falls--rather, is shoved--through the Rift and into the Rift Room already dead. This is less a problem for him than it might be for others, but it's still inconvenient.

If anyone notices the corpse in the Rift Room, they're free to investigate.

Morona is headed to the Rift Room to make sure no-one's come through, and of course, as luck would have it, someone has. And when she sees Jack lying on the floor, not moving, she automatically assumes the worst. Being a forensic pathologist, it's in her nature.

She runs over to him and kneels down, tentatively placing two fingers on his wrist to check for a pulse, somewhat frightened of receiving a vision from him. She then listens for a heartbeat by leaning down and placing her ear just over his chest. She finds none, but to be sure, she says, "Hey, are you alright? Can you hear me?"

It's not the touch that wakes him up, it's the universe's love for a coincidence. But he does wake up, with a jerk that nearly takes his skull into her face, and scrambles into a crouch.

He looks like he expects something to kill him. This would almost be ironic.

A second later he notices she's there and startles, eyes opening wide. "Whoa! How did you--" He reconsiders that. "Where are we?"

Morona screams and jumps back. "Oh my God!"

Pausing for a moment, she calms herself down, and says, "Sorry, I thought you were dead... We're in the Conrad Hotel, Chicago, Illinois."

Jack jumps a little, putting up his hands in a Not a threat! Sorry! display. "Sorry! I have that effect on people," he said, offering a grin. It'd be his most charming, but his attention is divided. "Conrad Hotel, eh? This may be a weird question, but has anything odd been going on here?"

Morona lets out a little sigh of relief. "It's alright. I'm new to all of this... supernatural stuff. Still a bit skittish."

"Plenty of weird things have been happening... a couple of weeks ago we had a freak earthquake. We've got people frequently coming through the Rift, and there's a demon stalking some of the other residents of the Hotel."

Of course, she's talking like he knows what she's talking about. Which he likely doesn't.

"Frequently?" Jack's surprised. "How frequently?" And is this just some sort of penal colony for everyone who pisses the Sifr off? His situation might be less unique than he'd thought.

Morona shrugs. "I don't know. At least once a week, usually more like... every other day." Hesitantly, she adds, "I don't live in the Conrad, I'm just helping out Brando. I'm native to this world...Not one of the Wanderers who come through the Rift."

"Ah." He smiles again. "Sorry for dropping in unannounced. Wasn't exactly my idea."

It occurs to him that he hasn't actually introduced himself. He's getting bad at this.

"Sorry," he says, dusting himself off and straightening anything needing to be straightened. He extends a hand. "Captain Jack Harkness. And you are?"

"It's alright, happens all the time," Morona says, easily. "I'm the medical assistant here, so I sometimes come to check the Rift Room for new arrivals."

"Oh, uh, I'm Dr. Morona Rainer," she responds, shaking his hand. "Though, you can call me 'Doc' or 'Doc Rainer' if you want. It's what my colleagues usually call me. I'm the chief Medical Examiner for Chicago."

Frowning, she asks, "You said you were a Captain? Are you military, or something?"

"I've been a bit of everything," Jack says, and looks her over. He's trying to gauge what level of confidence to grant her--there's no real reason to say either "Yeah, American volunteers, World War 2," nor is there any reason to tell her he was a Time Agent. Or anything else.

Nothing against her; he's just learned to keep information close.

"Yeah," he says. "Military. Long time ago."

Morona nods, accepting the answer without really questioning it. "Well, I'm supposed to take you to Dr. Jones for a medical exam and then a debriefing, though if she's not around, I'll do the exam instead."

Debriefing. Examination. "You sound like I'm settling in for the long haul," he says.

Morona observes him critically. "The Rift will kill you if you go back through it. It will literally tear you apart at the seams. I would rather not have to autopsy you in that state."

Jack's response is not quite what most would expect. He looks at the Rift, a considering expression on his face. "Never been torn apart at the seams before... surprisingly, actually."

He shakes himself out of the line of thought, and looks back to Rainer. Grins. "Still; seems like it might be more pleasant to stay and enjoy your company."
