Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future, so you know what keeps me hanging around...

Fall is coming to Chicago. The air is cooler, there are clouds thick in the sky (but not thick enough to be heralding rain just yet- just enough to be pleasantly cloudy), and while the leaves haven't started turning yet, the overabundance of pumpkins for sale and preemptive Halloween decorations give all the indication that the season is coming up ( Read more... )

Romeo hates having a meeting in the park. It's a ridiculous place to discuss legitimate business. He realizes that his boss is here in the park somewhere but that doesn't stop him from thinking park meetings are ridiculous. The individual that he's supposed to be meeting is mysteriously absent as well. He is frustrated and bored. Maybe that person is dead but the fact that no one bothered to tell Romeo about this does not help assuage the frustration.

He walks toward the young demon with the hula hoop. Boredom leads to odd conversations.

"If you focus on your core remaining centered and steady while you swing your hips, it helps."

The narration does not want to know how Romeo knows about hula-hooping. DOES NOT.

Piper drops the hula hoop and it clatters to the ground, her eyes going wide and her face turning several shades of red. There is an attractive person talking to her, and he was watching her hips and... Oh this is so wrong.

...Oh right, she was hula-hooping. Badly.

"Th-Thank you. I'll... Try that." She stands still and just sort of stares blankly in a nervously thankful way.

...Well, she's not going to resume hula-hooping while he's standing there.

Romeo smiles gently at her (yes, honestly gently). He takes a few steps closer to her but maintains a comfortable distance.

"I'm sorry." He waves his hand offhandedly. "It wasn't my intent to startle you or interrupt you."

It seems like his Italian accent always gets heavier when he's around young women. It can't be helped.

He has a very pretty accent. Jeepers. Piper shakes herself out of it and picks up her hula hoop again. "It's okay! I'm, um... Easily startled, as I keep telling people. It's, um... A problem. Uh... Um... You look kinda familiar."

It suddenly dawns on her mid-sentence and now that she's verbalized, she can't unsee it. He looks so familiar and she can't quite place him.

"Really? I'm positive I would remember you if I had met you before," Romeo says, sitting on a nearby bench and pretending to think about it for a moment. It's not all that hard to figure it out since she's a demon. "Were you at the Christmas Ball?"

It was such a wonderful opportunity to be made aware of the talents that exist in this city. He hopes there's another ball or dance of some kind with an open invitation to the entire supernatural world. It makes his job much easier so he can spend more time on his own projects.

"No, I don't think we've met. It's more like... Yes!" She bounces on the balls of her feet and, per usual, realizes she's being weirdly overzealous about trivial things and stops. "You're um... You danced with Buffy!"

She avoids mentioning the fact that he made Tay really, really homicidal. It was hard to get near Tay that whole night because of the rage, therefore it's kind of hard to forget what caused it... Not that she knows for certain that it was this guy, but, well, she did keep glaring at him. She can deduce from that.

Romeo smiles at her excitement.

"I did dance with Buffy. She's a very good dancer and a good friend." Friend is the perfect description for his feelings toward her. Never mind that they don't see each other often and when they do there's a lot of flirting involved.

He stands up and walks over to her, holding his hand out. "I'm Romeo. It's always nice to meet a friend of Buffy's."

She accepts his hand, still smiling. "I'm Piper. It's... Also nice to meet a friend of Buffy's. A friend that I didn't already know. You know, you should come by the Gauche sometime. I bet Buffy would like to see you."

...Except... That might make Tay very, very unhappy. She's felt some odd things off Tay re: Buffy, but she's never really thought about it, and, well, he seems like a nice guy!

...A nice guy with no pulse.

Oh.

Her grin suddenly gets a bit more nervous. It seems like she knew this already, but totally forgot and now that she's paying attention, she can actually feel what he is. That'll show her not to pay attention.

And in her surprise, she has not actually let go of his hand.

"I would but I get the impression that one of her very dear friends doesn't like me so I try to stay away."

Romeo notices that she hasn't let go but doesn't mind. His face remains neutral even a bit gentle as he watches her become more nervous in front of him. It's not difficult to understand what the cause is. They're touching after all. It's hard not to miss how cold and dead his hand is. Any demon with experience would know almost automatically. It can be jolting. He's used to it.

"Am I the first vampire that you've met?"

He hasn't bothered to force his hand away from hers. She'll let go when she's ready.

Piper chuckles nervously. "I... Yeah. That would be Tay." Piper's not really good at lying. Good at not saying things, but not so good at the lying thing.

She pulls her hand away as if she's been shocked, clearly appalled that she let herself be so obvious about it. "Yes. I mean... I'm sorry. I mean... Yes, you are. Sorry."

And now she's turning red. Blush, Piper, Piper!

Romeo nods though he doesn't comment on Tay any more. He gets the impression that her dislike for him may be based on jealousy or vampire stereotypes though angels don't often hold those.

He smiles at her.

"It's perfectly alright. You're not screaming and running in the other direction. Your reaction was really rather mild in comparison."

Piper blushes a little more, the redness making the freckles along her nose and cheeks stand out. "Well, I'm not really the... Screaming and running in the other direction... Type. More of the, 'freeze and get eaten by the monster' type."

She winces. It's sad, but true. If confronted by a monster, she would probably freeze like a little deer and let it eat her. Other people do the fighting. Piper is just the spazzy one with the emotion mojo.
