Madeline May (it's her stage name) has been living in the Conrad Hotel for a week and has apparently already managed to set the kitchen on fire.
Well, that's an exaggeration. It's not on fire. There's simply smoke curling out of the open oven. So the tuna casserole was left in too long!
No reason to panic.
Nothing is on fire.
She ventures into the smoke with oven mitts on. See? All under control! There's nothing to worry about! A stray sheet of paper floats from the counter into the oven and is engulfed in flame.
Maddy screams. And then the paper turns into a black char at the bottom of the oven. Flames gone.
So that was an exaggerated reaction. Nothing out of the ordinary. Maddy pulls the casserole out and plops it on to the stove. The tin foil pan is burnt all around the edges. She waves an oven mitt at the flames.
If one has come to explore the source of the smoke spilling into the cafeteria or the scream or the fire alarms, which have going on and off for the past two hours, they're likely to see the row of disaster dishes on the counter. And Maddy flipping through a messy cookbook. Although the rest of the kitchen is covered in mess, she is not.
