Usually, Jo tries to stay clean around Jamal. He doesn't need to see her like that. She wants to be normal for him. Normal as she can be, at least.

But the day's been hard. The thoughts, piling up. It's too much. She's sure he'll just overlook it. Like always. One of her little oddities, and let it go because he's that sweet. It's nice, having someone who actually worries about her. But at the same time, it just makes things so much more complicated.

That's why she likes the heroin. It makes everything simpler. It numbs and helps her forget who she was.

It took a lot of work, but Jo got the porch functional a while back. She replaced the rotting wood. She's sitting on a lawn chair on the front porch, nodding slightly. She's half-awake still, her eyes flickering open every few moments, mostly at some noise out in the street.
