Alex spends entirely too long in front of her wardrobe (not that there's much in it) trying to decide what to wear to meet Gene - till she realises that she's mad for wasting time like this. He's a construct, and even if he weren't, she still ought to be ashamed of herself. And it's hardly as if Gene cares about what she's wearing unless it's a)

"Right. Under other circumstances, DI Drake, I'd be making some very serious inquiries as to what crawled up your jacksie and died there, but seeing as how Tyler tells me I'll 'ave gone and shot you in some future or another, I might as well be generous. I'm a bit curious as to why I'd be shooting up some bird that will 'ave been going to work for me, and what about me attracts mad DIs from the future, but if there's any one thing I've picked up in this lovely shithole of a future, it's that some things I'm best not knowing." He flips the journal on his desk shut, clasps his hands together, and looks her over.
"I wouldn't believe you now, and I doubt I will have done then, if I wasn't sitting here in Chicago and turning into things every so often, so fine. You're from my future, you got shot in the head and thrown into the Gene Genie's lap, still in my future which happens to be your past, I shot you, you've probably got some hard feelings about it, and here we all are. Want a job?"

She narrows her eyes at the mention of Gene shooting her. "He shouldn't have mentioned that," she says, more to herself than to Gene. "It was an accident." Well, she's pretty sure it was an accident, all threats to do just that aside. But she's going to have words with Sam over that later, thanks. There's this thing called tact that Alex has heard about - only heard, mind you, but she's pretty sure that it doesn't involve telling people that they've shot you.
(This, of course, completely ignores the fact that Alex came here wanting to shout at him for it - and everything else that happened - herself, but she can't really blame him for something he hasn't done yet. Also, yes, Alex is irrational.)
"I heard about that," she muses. "The turning into things bit, I mean. A chipmunk, was it?" Yes, this is Alex poking the lion with a stick, but, seriously, you can't expect her to not mention it. She bites her lower lip, trying not to start giggling, but the laughter is evident in her eyes.

To say Gene's not best pleased by this might just be an understatement.
"Yes. Chipmunk and lion, and there's a bird got a chipmunk to the face that could tell you just how ridiculous that isn't." He'll leave out the part where she turned into a bear and nearly ate him. Also, the part where she's dead.
"And you never answered the question, Drake: Do. You. Want. A job?"

"It was an accident," she insists. "I was taken hostage briefly by a woman who'd been involved with the case we were investigating - she fired her gun at you and ran away, and you shot, but you hit me instead." At least, she's pretty sure that what happened; it's all a bit of a blur. And Gene had been threatening to shoot her, but the look on his face afterwards - well, it had to be a mistake.
No, sorry, chipmunk's still hilarious, but Alex is just going to refrain from bringing it up ever again and laugh about it in private instead. Just wait till your own Rift powers show up and fuck you over, Alex.
The humour's gone from her face now, replaced by that prim - and slightly strained - look. "Why, yes, Guv, I would like a job, however did you manage to guess?" Okay, so she can't help but be a little sarcastic when faced with Gene. It's developed into an instinct by now.
