farewell to Nova Scotia

[Conway and Callie are curently at Navy Pier.]

It's mid-May in Cape Breton, which means the dreary landscape is finally giving way to the colors of springtime - the winters always seem so long - and Conway is outside with Callie, walking along the shore of Blackett's Lake.

He's been trying to teach her how to fetch. She, apparently, does not understand why she should go get the thing that he threw. "When're you gonna learn some new tricks, huh? I've been tryin' to teach you this for years! How long's it gonna take?"

She ignores him in favor of a squirrel sitting just a few feet away.

... and when the squirrel starts running away, so does Caledonia.

"Callie! No! Hey! You get back here, you damn dog - Caledonia!" Conway's running so quickly after his dog (for the fifth time since Sunday) he barely notices the change in scenery until she abruptly stops running. The squirrel's gone.

So is the lake, and... everything else.

Conway's only been to three cities in his life: Sydney, which barely counts as a city, Halifax, and Toronto.

The buildings he's currently looking at don't belong to any of those.

"Uh..."

This can't be good, can it?
