Surprise! Elephant!

{Conrad Hotel Basement party thread!}The headwaitress at the Conrad hotel has seen an awful lot in her time working there. Angels, demons, shapeshifters, elementals who weren't aware they were elementals, and, on one particularly notorious occasion, an elemental who seemed to only be able to work with balsamic vinaigrette ( Read more... )

Farley does a double-take when Bernard mentions the elephant. Well, it looks like he hasn't seen everything after all...

On the other hand, food is food, especially when it comes from the restaurant - and it definitely looks like quality stuff. He moves towards the table, and begins examining the pasta.

Ivan is appreciating this place more and more as the days go by. Not only free food, but occasionally, free very good food.

He's plating up some chicken and rice for himself, examining the steamed vegetables, and when he finishes with that he glances over at the pasta Farley is looking at.

"I think I should thanks this elephant," he remarks idly, stepping with his slight limp around to the fruit salad. "At least, it seems to have good taste."

"Indeed."

Farley glances over at Ivan, curious about what he is - Wanderer? Angel? Something else entirely?

The accent seems easier to guess - Russian, probably, something east European...

He goes back to the pasta - he'll start with a little, and if he wants something else, he'll come back for more.

"At any rate, it makes for an interesting change of pace..."

Ivan nods. The man is a wanderer - he knows that without letting his wings out. And he's heard about the trouble wanderers are having with the outside world these days. ...really, it seems like they've had their share of trouble since the first ones stepped through. And as convenient as the basement is, he's not about to style it exciting.

"We live in interesting times," he says, sniffing at one of the pasta sauces. Then, as if to explain himself, he adds "but not the sort of interesting which is also, I think, something to be..." He pauses, hunting for a word. "Joined into."

Farley nods after a moment - living here has been anything but a piece of cake. Romana, the fear gas, and now the CLF...

"True, but at least this is better than..." He frowns slightly. "Well, a lot of things..."

"Better than a prod in the eye with a stick," Ivan says, the corner of his mouth quirking up. He can't remember, now, where he first ran into that quaint English expression, but he is fond of it.

After a moment, though, he turns to look at Farley. "I wonder," he says. "Do wanderers often go out into the city? Or do they keep you here?" He understands that a lot of them want to stay hidden with the CLF causing trouble, but surely before that, and after...

"Typically?" Farley glances over at Ivan, curious. "Well, they don't really keep us here, and I suspect that everyone has been out in the city at some point..."

He looks thoughtful for a moment, still trying to figure out what Ivan is.

Archangel would be the answer, though good luck getting to it. Growing up in Russia, where archangels often as not don't have time to hunt demons between all the times they have to work with them for the Motherland, and being out of commission since sometime in the 1930s, has left him pretty unlike the American archangels which are usually seen around here.

"Good," he says. "It is always good to have the fresh air." He gives a thin-lipped smile. "The mind becomes slow if it is indoors all the time."

"Oh, don't I know that feeling..." Farley rolls his eyes, annoyed. Safe though the basement may be for the moment, there are only so many times one can think up ways to Show Them All without it growing a little dull.

Doc's enjoying some chicken when he spots a familiar face. "Farley! Haven't seen you in a while," he says, moving over to greet the other man. "How have you been?"

He's trying not to make it too obvious, but he's honestly just glad to see one of his friends is still alive and okay. Ever since Aubrey, part of him is terrified he's going to see another person he cares about on the news and. . . .

Farley grins when Doc calls his name.

"Oh, well enough, I think. Bored as hell-" He frowns in annoyance. "-but otherwise, I'm okay..."

Doc nods in understanding. "I know how that goes," he says, between bites of chicken. "I've been working some more on my time machine designs myself. Trying to keep busy. . . ." He glances around the basement. "Hoping that the city doesn't decide to implode upon itself one day." That's a genuine fear with Chicago.
