Another day of decomposing light...

Mac is lurking around the pier.. Or rather, she's lurking around the parts of the pier that people can actually get to, considering most of it is closed off thanks to whatever the hell went on down there about a week ago. She's annoyed that she wasn't there for that- it could have been awesome. For the most part, she's trying to see if she can ( Read more... )

Maka has ways of making you talk.

...Er. Maka is at the pier! She managed to slip past a distracted guard and is inside the warehouse that had chunks torn from it by the Gyrados's attacks. She stares at a sagging support beam, wishing she'd been there when the whole thing was going down. She isn't good enough at soul-sensing to tell if Soul was here, but it seems like the kind of thing he'd be involved in.

With a sigh, Maka kicks at a loose bit of cement. Another dead end.

"Heeey!" And this is the cry of an outraged Mac who is still on the other side of the damn yellow tape. What? They won't let ex-military in, but tiny girls are totally okay? There is no justice in this world. Luckily for Mac, the men she's been hounding are distracted by some guy who is claiming he has an eyewitness account of everything that went down at the pier and they're trying to explain to him that they have all the eyewitnesses.

So with the skill of someone well-versed in special ops.... Mac just climbs under the yellow tape and trots up to Maka with a look of ill ease.

"Kid, I think this is the wrong place and the wrong time to be poking around."

...Hush. Mac likes kids. She's more worried, then annoyed, but hey! She's in here now. She can tell the nice officer people that she was thinking of the children if she gets caught.

"I'm not a kid. And I'm looking for someone." Maka huddles into her jacket. There are blood splatters here and there, like juice stains from overripe fruit that got thrown against the floor. She crouches down next to one and scowls at it. "I should've been here."

Mac looks her up and down. It looks like a kid, it talks like a kid, and she could secretly be 735 years old, but Mac's not buying it. "Uh-huh. What would your friend be doing here?"

Although that... That Mac can sympathize with. She sighs and looks out over the now calm waters of the lake and wonders if there's anything else lurking out there. "Me too, kid," she says. The last part is unnecessary, but Mac's a bit of a bitch. "Things like this never happen when I'm around." She looks down at her, arching a brow. "But why would you want to get mixed up in something like that... Shouldn't you be in school?"

Maybe the kid isn't what she seems...

"Soul's my weapon. I thought maybe..." It was only the ghost of a thought, really. A vague possibility. She shakes her head and straightens up, patting the dust off of her knees. "And I should be. But it doesn't exist here, I guess."

It doesn't occur to her that telling a complete stranger that is probably a bad idea. Score one, Maka's naivete.

"Your... Weapon?" Okay, Mac's been in the army. She knows men who name their guns and refer to them like they're their best friends in the world, but this is a little odd even then.

Mac pinches the bridge of her nose. "Okay, hon, you're going to have to give an old lady some clarity here." Well, she is old... Never mind that she doesn't look much older than thirty, thank you angelic blood.

"Your weapon is just wandering around on its own? Is that what you're telling me? And what doesn't exist here?"

The girl reeks of wanderer and Mac doesn't even have her wings out, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want to know what the hell she's talking about. Guardian angel instincts kicking in.

"Well he's not just an regular sword or something," Maka says, sounding defensive. "He's a proper demon weapon. He's--" Sheesh, how does she even explain something that doesn't seem strange to her in the least?

"He's a scythe. He can walk around on his own because he's a person. And Shibusen doesn't exist. My school."

Oh.

Okay.

That explains... Nothing.

"Wanderer, then," she accesses what she already believed, and decides to leave it at that. She turns around, notes that the officers are still talking to that guy and gently places a hand on the small of her back to guide her further away from the red tape.

"I'd take care about where you poke around then, honeylamb. Those CLF bastards are thick on the ground and I bet after this little fiasco, they'll be thicker."

She wouldn't be surprised if they were lurking around here. Unfortunately, they aren't what's lurking in the shadows of the half-ruined pier. Mac doesn't know that yet though.

"I'm not 'honeylamb' or 'kid.' My name is Maka Albarn." She allows Mac to lead her, though, because she's not feeling any hostility from the woman. "And if they try anything, I'll cull them."

Easier said, without Soul. But she's not helpless. She refuses to be helpless. Maka stops, eying Mac curiously for the first time. "Why're you here?"

Mac plants her hands on her hips and arches her eyebrows. Okay, okay. Kid has a mouth on her. What is it with all these mouthy kids? Granted, she's not exactly being a nice lady, herself, but. "You know, Maka, respect for adults goes a long way, especially when those adults are angels." She lets her wings unfurl through the slits in her coat, short, kinda stubby and mostly reddish brown. She's not particularly concerned about the CLF, herself. "You sound like a Barnam when you talk like that. Culling." She shakes her head, snickering a little. "Who even says things like that?"

As an answer to her question, she just tilts her head to the side. "Curious. I just recently kicked out of the military. I think I have a right to venture into warzones and see if there's anything I can-"

With her wings out, Mac's senses are sharper and now she's aware that there's something moving through the rubble and wreckage. "Well, shit," she mutters.

"A technician does. A weapon's meister. I harvester of souls." She crosses her arms across her chest, preparing something suitably irreverent about how she lives in an apartment complex full of demons, but then stills when Mac seems alerted to something. Maka slips up next to her, scowling at the dark inside the warehouse.

"What is it?" She can try a soul sense, but if she doesn't know what she's looking for--rather, if what she's looking for isn't human--the odds are against Maka detecting anything useful.

"I don't know," Mac bites down on her lip, her wings mantling uncomfortably. She catches something out of the corner of her eye- a glint of silver and the odd sound of something slithering across concrete, and then it's gone again. Instinctively she puts herself in front of Maka- guardian angel instincts.

"Guess you don't have any weapons on you now, d'you?" She's pretty much just working with a taser. After this, she may wind up investing in a gun, legal or not. It's necessary in Chicago.

"Nothing but a box cutter." God does that make her feel naked. She squints at the spot where she though she saw a flash of silver, opening herself up just a little to try and see what's there. There's something there, but she can't tell what. She's not good enough, and besides, if she opens up too much the whatsit might be able to use her own wavelength to attack her.

What she wouldn't give for Soul to be here.

"Okay, so we're pretty much fucked," Mac says, her tone perfectly conversational, despite the fact that there is a thing slithering around and she has no idea where it is.

She turns her head to look at Maka. "So. You want to cover yourself in breadcrumbs and lay down on the sidewalk or do you want to run like fucking hell?"

Mac doesn't actually wait for an answer. She grabs Maka by the arm and starts to bolt for the yellow tape....

And that's when something roughly as big as an anaconda and twice as wide with a dragon's head and one leg near the front of its body bursts out of a nearby building with enough force to send them both sprawling and promptly blocks their path with a vicious hiss.

Maka yelps and skips back a step. Not a Golem, maybe an immortal? But she isn't getting that feeling from it, and it hasn't said anything. Maka fumbles the box cutter out and ratchets several inches of the blade free. She casts around for something heavier--some bit of debris, anything--but the only things within easy reach are chunks of cement.

"We should split up."

Mac pulled her wings closer to her body before she hit the ground to avoid breaking anything and now that she's back on her feet, they're stretched to their limit and mantling as she stares at the dragon.. Thing.

"Yeah." She attempts to go one way to get the dragon away from the kid, expecting the sudden move to distract it, but the dragon just hisses and lashes it's thin, whip-like tail out and grabs her by the ankle, bringing her down to the ground again. It's a miracle that she hasn't broken anything yet, although her skull hurts quite a bit now.

"Ow," she hisses. "That might not be the best idea."

And now the dragon is crawling towards Maka, hissing and spitting while Mac struggles to get back to her feet.
