See the devil on the doorstep now, my oh my

Cy is back in Grant Park, chunnering away to herself while she digs around the base of Buckingham fountain. She is looking for her sunlight-marble. She distinctly remembers having it here--though whether she had it here when she went with the fox or whether she had it here when she was left is an open question.

It's a hell of a cliché, rain at a funeral.

Then again, it hadn't really been a funeral. Just a memorial service and an urn - the body cremated for health and safety precautions - that their mother wasn't planning on locking away in some marble crypt or scattering to the winds, oh no. And if he'd had to listen to one more person offer him a meaningless platitude....

Which is why Gabe is wandering through the park in a suit and dress shoes instead of normal clothing.

Cy pauses in her hunt, her ears swiveling around. She hears a person. With a soft hiss, she burrows into the leaves and peers out at him. Her 'stealth' is ruined by the fact that she's still talking away as she watches Gabe wander close by.

"Lost and losing, it's all a shot, a shot at the head, hello, come in Chicago, this is the future speaking."

The rustle of leaves is what gets his attention first.

The voice has him looking around cautiously.

"...Okay then, future. This is Chicago; the rest of the city maybe in a fighting mood at this time, but right now? I'm not."

Unless you're one of those CLF asshats, in which case all bets are off.

Silence. Chicago spoke back. This is a new one. Cy is not sure how to handle it.

She pokes her head out of the leaves. "You broke it!"

...It's a cat.

A talking cat.

With something stuck on (in?) its head.

"Only in Chicago," he mutters to himself before refocusing on the furball in question. "Broke what? My sanity? 'Cause that's old news, Fuzzy."

It is a cat. A talking, psychic cat. She clambers out of the leaves and inches toward him, leaves stuck to her everywhere. "The whole world's a mad spin, heave-to and leave the sails open, it's heading for the storm."

Gabe, meet Cy.

"Ain't that the fucking truth."

Gabe has always liked cats, for all that he's never had a pet. The curse of having a mother and brother who are (were) allergic. So he's crouching down a bit, one empty hand carefully held out for inspection.

"So why would you be out here? Didn't think cats liked storms all that much."

She sniffs his hand, then rubs her face against it. "I'm looking for my sunlight. I lost it."

Cy looks back at the fountain and sighs. "Lots of dead yesterdays in the way."

"As well as a few dead leaves in your fur." Which he's willing to help with, if it won't scare her off. "So do you have a name, little sunlight hunter? Or should I stick with Fuzzy and 'hey you'?"

She turns in a circle one direction, then the opposite one, apparently trying to inspect herself. After one more turn about she gives up. "I'm Cy for cypress. The boats on the old river run into the new, and it's all coming up carnage."

Cy itches ferociously behind one ear and sends several leaves flying.

And he really doesn't want to continue that line of conversation.

"Think you still have a few there. Alright if I get those?" Decent subject change, right? Hopefully, one that won't get him clawed and/or bitten in the hand reaching out to do so.

She holds very, very still as he pulls the leaves off, ready to bolt but not quite doing it. She's getting better about being around people again, albeit slowly. "You got them all. All in your head, the swirling gray leaves. Bitten through by seasons."

"That so?" Stepping back a little, hands at his sides. "At least they're out of your fur."
