If I could attack with a more sensible approach, obviously that's what I'd be doing...

In the training room at the Main Gauche, there's a Slayer with her Christmas present, going through a few sword exercises she remembers from before. It's been a while since she's had a sword in her hands, but now that she does... It's easier to fall back into than she would have thought. Muscle memory comes easily to Slayers ( Read more... )

Martha Jones steps out of the Conrad. She visits the hotel as often as she can, because it still feels like home to her. Because of Brando, she feels a sense of responsibility to the place even still. Martha notices the Doctor entering the park. Even though it's night, the street lights help illuminate his path.

She looks both ways, crosses the street, and catches up to him with a smile, stopping underneath the nearest streetlight.

"Fancy meeting you here."

The Doctor blinks and looks over at her with a slight frown, a little surprised, and then brightens as soon as he actually sees her. "Martha!" He covers the distance between them quickly, bouncing a little. "What're you doing around here?" The Doctor's sometimes a little oblivious to what his friends do when they're not around him.

Martha smiles at him.

"Visiting the hotel. I've still got friends there, you know," she says, head tilted as she looks up at him with a smile and stretches up on her feet to kiss him quick on a whim. Nothing long, just a little kiss, but she pulls away from it looking rather pleased. "What're you doing 'round here?"

Which is a useless question she realizes. The Doctor wanders. There is not usually a reason for why he's at any particular place at any particular time.

"I was just... you know... walking," he answers with a shrug. Which is all the answer you need. At least it's better than the other day when he was wandering down by Calisto's warehouse.

He holds out a hand to her, waggling his fingers with a hopeful grin. Hand-holding is good. Especially if you have to run.

"Also, I wanted to see if the coffee shop was still standing this time."

"You. Always with the vague answers," she says, but doesn't sound like it bothers her much, or like she was expecting anything more.

The Doctor wanders. She has learned this by now, honestly.

Martha smiles at him and the expression on his face. She takes a few seconds to look as though she's unsure just to tease him, and then she reaches out and takes his hand, linking their fingers together and feeling much warmer already.

"This time? What's happened to it now?" It's hard to believe how much hell that poor coffee shop has gone through ever since she and Des had turned the corner to it being on fire.

"Oh, nothing that I'm aware of... Well. The last I heard, there was a meteor or an electrical fire or... whatever. But it's alright now. Still standing, same as ever. Maybe not same as ever. They've got this big green chair in the corner, and it's incredibly unattractive. ...Very comfortable, though."

Yes, this is of vital importance and Martha should absolutely know this. He tightens his fingers around her hand, grinning brightly at her. Like there was ever any doubt she'd take his hand, when she's done so every time since they first met in the hospital on the moon.

...Well. Maybe not every time. There was that once, but she's here with him now and neither of them could leave if they tried, so it's almost like they chose it. Somehow.

"A meteor or an electrical fire? ...right. Not much difference between the two, really," Martha says, scrunching her nose a little and rolling her eyes at him, and then she has to try very hard not to laugh. "And have you informed them of the incredibly unattractive green chair in the corner and its potential negative effects in the long run? It might be a factor in their decrease in coffee sales."

She grins right back almost as brightly, because how can she resist the look on his face? It's utterly attractive and contagious.

Yes. Lets just pretend like if it weren't for the Rift, Martha Jones would still be around grabbing your hand, Doctor, and going on adventures with you throughout the universes. It's okay to pretend.

"Well, it was a comfortable chair, so maybe that... balances out the unattractiveness of the chair on the whole." He cannot believe he is having this conversation. He's just going to... get off that topic now.

"I think there may be some odd... localized Rift disturbance around the coffee shop. Draws things to it. Arsonists, demons, explosive devices... meteors... Might have to come back some time with the proper equipment, see what I can find..." Which isn't precisely off the topic, but at least it's more up his alley than coffee sales.

Martha smirks at him. Nice change of subject. Yes, she's just going to think that in her head and not out loud, because he can probably tell what she means by that smile, anyway.

"Yeah, you should think about doing that some time. Let me know the results, because... I have sort of felt like Des and I somehow managed to curse it. Forever. I don't think it had any trouble before we turned the corner that day, but maybe I'm wrong. Never actually been back more than once to have a coffee there. They make fantastic cappuccinos and great scones, too"

The Doctor chooses to ignore the smirk, still grinning at her a little. "Oh, you should go back! They've got this barista, name of Lisle... Did I mention her? After that one time with the bombs... She's been there since before the first time it exploded, nice girl."

He pauses, catching up with the initial part of that statement after a moment, and adds, "And don't be silly, you didn't curse it. How could you have cursed it?"

"No, don't believe you did mention her." Or if he did, she hadn't been paying attention to that part, which is possible. She smiles. "Really? Been there that long, through all of that, and hasn't left yet? That is impressive."

Martha shrugs her shoulders, glancing at him.

"It was just one of those irrational... jumps of the mind," she says, because she can't really explain it. "You think you've got so much bad luck that eventually it starts shluffing off of you and landing on other people and places. I'm not saying it makes any sense, but at the time, it seemed like it was possible."

"Nah. If anything, you're what's keeping it from being more destructive than it could've been. I mean, honestly, if you think about it... except for that once with the guns and the hellhound and the fire, it could've all been much worse..." Not that that makes any more sense than her and Des cursing it, but if they're going to be irrational, they're going to be optimistic and irrational.

"And if anyone's got the bad luck, it's probably me. So I wouldn't worry too much. ...Well, except inasmuch as you tend to be around me, so... forget that, actually. No bad luck. For anyone." Yes, because just because the Doctor says it makes it true.
