Despite the way things tend to explode every time Sam leaves wherever he happens to be living at the time, he does need to get out every now and then. He felt the need for a little fresh - if freezing - air, and so he's ventured out into the cold. The Tower doesn't seem to have any parkas in the closets, and he should probably look into that, but for now, a thick jacket will do. He doesn't really have an excuse like a shopping trip, because someone (he suspects the robot) keeps restocking the kitchen, but it's just a walk, and he should be back before anyone even notices he's gone.
It's a gray, gloomy evening, not quite dark, clouds threatening but not snowing just yet, and the icy air is enough of a shock to the system that Sam at least feels like he can think clearly for the first time since the night with the bombs. It's a welcome change.
He walks with no particular destination in mind, hands shoved in his pockets, breath misting in the air. He's not sure what he's doing, exactly. He remembers telling Annie once that if he just kept walking, he was bound to come to a place where he couldn't think of any more streets, any more faces... But this isn't 1973, this is real, and all that's going to happen if he keeps walking is that he's going to freeze.
Sam takes a breath and starts across the next street. On reflection, that was probably one of the big mistakes, right after stepping outside in the first place.
