You're Only Old Once

Doc Brown has found himself a nice little coffee and pastry shop not too far from the Conrad Hotel and is currently inside, enjoying a piece of cake and a cup of joe. Hey, it is his birthday -- he feels he's entitled to it. Next stop is the hardware store to pick up something he's had his eye on, then the park for a little more weather powers ( Read more... )

JD likes to visit this shop during his break from working at the Conrad. He thinks he's coming down with something, likely the start of the flu. It's not surprising, considering how many people he deals with on a daily basis and the lack of the kind of sanitation he had working at the hospital. If he wore gloves working at the hotel, people would look at him weird.

More so than usual.

"Hey!" JD says and smiles when he walks in and sees Doc. "Fancy meeting you here! What brings you to this side of Chicago?"

Doc grins back. "Hi, JD! How are you? Haven't seen you around much." Granted, he's been working hard on his flux capacitor and JD's probably been busy with his job at the hotel. Still, it's good to see him again.

"Confectionary," Doc says in response to the question, pointing at his snack with his fork. "It's my birthday today, so I figured I'd treat myself to something special." He licks his lips. "Have to say, they make a good chocolate cake here."

"Yeah. I've been busy and feeling a bit under the weather so thought it best to stay indoors for a while," JD says, scratching the back of his head in that awkward way of his.

He grins at the news.

"Seriously? Happy Birthday!" JD sits down at the table with him... and promptly breaks into song. "They say it's your birthday! Well, it's my birthday, too! Nah, not really, but I wanted to do something different than the generic birthday song."

"Oh. Sorry to hear about you feeling sick." Poor kid. Though Doc's hoping JD's more or less over whatever he had, because he doesn't want to catch it either.

"Yup! 66 years old today. Or close enough, given I can't get an exact figure on my age." He laughs at JD's little song. "I see. I would have adapted the 'Unbirthday Song' from Disney's Alice In Wonderland myself." He has a bit more cake. "Though now I'm curious -- when is your birthday?"

It may be a sign of how good this place is, or at least how nice a location it's found, that when Andy turns away from the counter with her triple-chocolate-fudge cake and caramel mocha, there's really no place to sit. Which is a problem, as she told them she'd take the meal here rather than to go, and she doesn't think they'd much appreciate her running off with their dishes.

Still. She's a friendly person, she can take care of herself, she's probably not going to get abducted by strangers in a coffee and pastry shop, so she heads over to the nearest person sitting alone.

"You seem to have the same idea I had," she says, nodding to his cake. "Mind if I join you? I don't think they were expecting to do this much business when they built the seating area."

Doc looks up in mild surprise at the new person, but smiles and nods. "No, not at all. It does seem pretty crowded around here, doesn't it?" He looks around at the mass of people drinking coffee and eating pastries. "Then again, the only other coffee shop I've really heard of around here is the one that keeps exploding, so. . . ."

He takes another quick bite of cake before holding out a hand. "Dr. Emmett Brown."

Andy chuckles, taking the seat.

"I think everyone is convinced that it can't possibly happen X times in a row after it's already blown up... what is it, every two months? And then the universe just has to keep on proving them wrong. But that's Chicago for you." Why, just this week, I was captured by a random teleporting psychopath and rescued by a giant alien spaceship. "Things never turn out normal."

She takes a bit of her cake, with an audible noise of approval. Hey, she's on forced trauma leave, she's going to enjoy every bit of this. Time off for a paramedic in Chicago? That's stuff to be treasured.

"Exactly," Doc says, rolling his eyes slightly. "It's been oddly quiet lately, though. I don't quite trust it, but I'll enjoy it while it's here." Hey, he hasn't been kidnapped by any random teleporting psychopaths or rescued by giant alien spaceships -- he has no idea there's still craziness happening in Chicago. "Because sooner or later. . . ."

Doc grins, taking a sip of his coffee. "They do make good cake in here, don't they? I'm glad I found this place." He smiles at his cup. "Coffee's not half-bad either." Ahh, the pleasures of good food.
