Finally I'll have something worthwhile

Jul 23, 2008 20:20

Gwen caught the news. About the bank and the mayor. And while this isn't her world, she's affected by the things that happen in this world, and this has her worried

She's in the back of the cafeteria in the Conrad basement, pacing, and trying not to feel useless.

She really hates this place. Really.

Robin is in the cafeteria. For once, he's not running around, but he's done about all he can do and has... mostly run out of energy. Sorry Robin no matter how much caffeine you consume it cannot combat exhaustion levels like you've managed to build up unless an IV shot the stuff into your veins. ((Ahem.))

He's smoking. Yeah, something he took up recently as in a week after his last conversation with Natasha she who must not be named.

Robin glances up at Gwen and it does take him about fifteen minutes to gather the energy or will up to talk to her. "There a reason you're pacing around like that? Oh. Right, was supposed to give you something to do..."

Gwen jumps a little, startled, when he first speaks, but she smiles a little. "No, it's fine. You're busy. I'm just... with the bank robbery and the mayor being killed, it's been a... busy day."

In the world. Out there. Where people have things to do.

"What?"

Robin sighs, pressing his fingers to his forehead and shoving the cigarette back in his mouth. In and out. Right. He can do calming exercises... really.

"Take a five minute break and all hell breaks lose. Figures. That on the news or something?"

Gwen nods. "I thought you'd heard. Just happened about fifteen, twenty minutes ago." She raises an eyebrow. "When was the last time you slept?"

Yes, shes going to mother him. Just a bit.

"No. My job usually doesn't involve watching news reports." Although if it becomes relevant enough, he may have to add it to the long list in his head of what his job does entail.

He raises both of his eyebrows in response (what is this, poker?).

"I'm not entirely sure how that's relevant."

Gwen smiles a little. "It's not, really, you just look like the walking dead. No offense."

Hey, she's helpful! Really! She's just... taking the opportunity to point out that a zombie looks more alive than he does.

Robin actually laughs at that, even if it's a little weak and strained.

"Gee, thanks," he says. Ah, sarcasm. But he's smiling, vaguely, which is good, because he never smiles anymore.

He finishes the cigarette, looking away from her for a moment, before he looks back.

"So I never gave you anything to do and you took it upon yourself to rid the basement of its walking dead?"

"Not exactly, no," she says, with those beautiful Welsh vowels the narration loves so much. "You never gave me anything to do and I took it upon myself to do something useful. Which is what you won't be if you don't get some sleep soon."

"Mm. You sound like my sister. Or possibly that assistant that keeps following me around."

Robin shakes his head, smirking, a little. Yes, he says assistant with a certain level of disdain, but we all know the truth.

"So I'm coming to the conclusion that the bank robbery went very successful for whoever was pulling it off. If it's got you pacing as you were."

"Well, someone's got to look out for your type," she says rather flippantly, but smiles. She rather likes Robin, snappishness aside.

Then she sighs and flops down across from him. "They blew up the bank," she says. "And I'm sure all the hostages they had inside were killed in the explosion. Yes, it was very successful."

"My type? What type is that? Zombie like? Really, you're not supposed to look out for them, just cut off their heads."

Robin glances over at her when she sits down.

He sighs, heavily.

"Think I'm going to need another cigarette for this." And he takes one out, hell, even offers her one, which is something. Shows that he likes her in his own... weird way. "Blew up the bloody bank. ...obviously, this was about more than money."

Gwen smiles gratefully, but shakes her head. She hasn't smoked since university, and she'd like to keep it that way. "Your type. Type A personality, bit of a workaholic, of the belief that absolutely no one else can do their job."

She rolls her shoulders. "Obviously it was. The questions are what it was about and who it was. I don't know enough about this world or even this city to begin to guess what's going on, but... it's not good, to state the obvious."

"Well, not only do I believe that. It's, also, complete and utter truth."

Robin closes his eyes as he lights the cigarette. Maybe he's hoping to burn his fingers? He gets it lit and smokes it quietly as he nods.

"Not exactly the mastermind here. I organize, do minor things, but this is... a bit over my head. Considering this city, anything is possible. Demon, wanderer, supernatural..." He rubs his forehead where the headache enjoys developing time and time, again. "Obviously trying to get someone's attention. If it's not ours, it's someone else's. And if it's not ours now, there's a chance there will be one for us. Soon."

"Probably a good thing it got brought to your attention, then," Gwen says with a tight smile. Well, at least she's managed to be vaguely useful...

"If there's any way I can help, just... shout. It's not like I've got anything more pressing."

"Yeah, course. Thanks." Robin might just look like he's not exactly here at the moment, and he's not. He's thinking. He does like having shit to do. "I'll have to... talk to Romana about it then."

He really thinks about it for a moment as he smokes quietly. Yes, he knows the horribleness of feeling useless. For him, it's much different. Boredom leads to rage and death, but he gets that it can be nearly as bothersome for people without vengeance issues.

"Maybe looking into who's behind all this. Strictly research so it's not hands on or anything, but I imagine that's what I'll be charged with once I speak with Romana. Making calls, paying attention to news reports, making notes about details that could be potentially relevant, that sort of thing."

Gwen nods, and there's a faint sense of relief in the air because... oh, she loves having something to do right now. Even if it's only theoretical.

"I don't have the resources I did in Cardiff, but... a computer with internet access, access to the local newspapers. Do they have digital copies as well, here?"
