Des has so missed Dinah's mixed drinks and he has one in his hands as he meanders through the party, grinning like an idiot, which is generally how he always grins, so it's nothing strange. It's been awhile since they've had a big group together since the Fall of the Basement and long before, honestly, so he's making the most of the party.

So there is a Des! Mingling! Feel free to prod him. He's slightly buzzed and in good spirits and may lead the charge in drunk table dancing later if he can convince Martha to join him.

Yeah, Des's protests about not table-dancing apparently go away when he gets into a party mood.

Martha is a little more than slightly buzzed, which is surprising, because she has been running around so much she didn't have much time to drink. Nothing like making up for last time.

"Des!" She practically squeaks with glee, smiles at him, and leans against him. Hey, just because they live together in this house doesn't mean they can't mingle together, too. "The party's looking good, huh? I'm so glad we could pull it off."

"Martha Jones!" Des throws an arm around Martha and gestures with his cup. "It's looking amazing, and I'm so glad I didn't have to hold a convention center hostage just so you could have a party."

He would have done it though. Totally.

"And what's this 'we' business?" He drawls, looking down at the top of her head (Martha is tiiiiiny). "You're the belle of the ball, Miss Jones, organizing this whole shindig."

"I'm really glad you didn't, too, though it sort of would've been fun to decorate a whole convention center. It's just... require far too many decorations. So it's best that we just stuck to the house then, yeah?"

Martha laughs, tilting her head to the side as she looks up at him with a loving smile.

"Oh, but you moved the couches where I told you to and put up the really tall decorations. And technically it's our house so it's our party." She has to giggle though. "Belle of the ball? Seriously? I don't think I've ever been called that before."

Des grins down at her in return. "I'm the man of the house and it is in my manly job description to move furniture and do things that only tall people can do. People expect it out of me, but I see your point." He squeezes her shoulders a bit and takes a sip of his drink briefly, and nearly chokes on it when she reacts to his neckname.

"Really?" He says, lowering the drink a bit and smiling just a bit brighter. "Well, then I guess it's my sole duty to make sure you're the belle of the ball more often, so you can hear it as many times as necessary. Don't ask how I'm going to do that, I have ways and they're covert and secret."

Which is Des Language for 'He has no clue.' Oh Des.

Martha has to try really hard not to laugh at the 'manly job description', because honestly, it's hilarious and she's at that beautiful buzzed point where everything is funnier than it should be.

"Really," she nods, as seriously as she can manage for as long as she can manage (not long), before she grins, again and actually laughs this time. "Oh, okay. That's your sole duty. Got it. I think most of your trouble is getting people to actually use that phrase. Beyond that, it might not be too hard. 'specially if I keep throwin' parties!"

Des deigns to ignore the fact that he can almost tell she wants to laugh at him about his 'manly job description.' Not that he cares. This is what he exists for- the saying of words that are occasionally amusing, especially when they make Martha laugh.

"I can be very convincing," he says, nodding gravely and taking another sip of his drink. "And a few more ordeals like the ones we keep coming out of and I'd say we're going to need more parties."

He pauses, frowning a little. "Although, on second thought, I'd just like things to not go to hell for awhile in general, how does that sound?"

"Oh, yes. Weekly parties is really what we need. If anyone had that sort of money... I keep wondering when the credit cards Brando gave me are going to run out and I'm going to have to find an actual job."

Martha makes a soft, happy sound and nods against him, taking a drink from the glass Dinah passes to her. Nothing like having a bartender that takes care of the hosts without even having to ask.

"Yes, please. Though I think we've been wishing for that for a long time now, yeah? Someday."

"One day we're all going to have to find real jobs." He grimaces a little at the thought. 5,000 years of existence and his only real job was being a paranormal investigator and he has to wonder if there's even money in that in this world.

Never mind the fact that they're ghosts in this world- non-entities- and that's going to make getting jobs and actually existing something of a problem, but he'll think about that later.

He cuddles her a bit closer and chuckles. "We have, but it doesn't hurt to keep on wishing. Something might give."

Or everything might get steadily worse. Such is the Rift.

Martha makes a face at that with a little sigh, glancing at the food.

"Ew. Real jobs. Sort of sad to think that after all that training... I've got to get just a regular job. I mean, faking IDs is one thing, but finding a way to prove I've had medical training? Still it's probably for the best. I'm busy enough without a full time job as a doctor in some hospital."

And she still practices medicine. Or did more when they lived in the Conrad.

She smiles when he cuddles her closer.

"Too right. And something had better give soon or else it'll have me to deal with." Martha laughs softly and leans up to kiss him, pulling back with a pleased smile. "Never too late to attempt to be optimistic."

"I had to forge my PI license," he admits off-handedly. "Not the first few times, but I'd been doing it since the 20's and I got sick of having to get re-certified."

Well, okay he didn't forge anything- Caitlin Kennedy had some boys who did that mess. Des is so not above finding an accomplished forger around here though. One who can make them (the Wanderers) exist. Home is a pipe dream at this point, he thinks.

Anyway. Happier things.

He smiles around her kiss, growling a little in pleasure that peters off into a soft whine when she pulls away. "Nope and I have faith that you'll show the universe whose boss if it doesn't start playing nice."

And he taps her gently on the nose. Randomly.

"Really?" She looks up at him, smiling up at him. It occasionally slips her mind just how incredibly ancient her boys are. She's really a baby in comparison. "Yeah, guess it'd be kind of a big hassle to keep doing that."

Martha might just have to kiss him, again, for his growling.

"Course I will." She's all tipsy and warm from the alcohol, and then giggles at the nose tap and then kisses him, again. "Mmm, I love you and your randomness. It's a wonderful thing."

"Just remember where the edge of the table is," Kara comments wryly, somehow just appearing at Des' side with a glass of some fairly unidentifiable alcohol in hand. "You're going to look pretty silly." Then again, if you ask Kara, that's a fairly normal course of events when it comes to Des, but she feels she might as well warn him gently as she can. Call it a younger-sister-type-thing duty or something.

Call it doing a few last favors for him while she can. There are things Kara's trying desperately not to think about, much less let Des know about. Which may not be the kindest thing, in the long run, but the easiest for her.

Des is far too used to Kara doing that than any (currently) mundane person should be. He doesn't flinch when she just appears, merely accepts this as fact- it's what Kara does. She does not saunter off from across the room, she appears.

He wrinkles his nose at her and gives her a cheerful smile. "Sillier than I'd look actually dancing on the table in the first place? Maybe if I fall off, I'll remember to never do it again."

And that is why the two of them get along so well- aside from moments where she just says things even he can't find sense in, he just generally accepts that she can read his mind and reacts to what's unsaid. It's a good way to be, honestly.

He debates asking if she's feeling better, but decides against it. Last thing he needs is to dredge up that again on a happy occasion.

"You won't," Kara says brightly. "Maybe if you fell on your head hard enough..." She sounds doubtful, though. It would take a hell of a whack to get something through Des' head. And that's if it doesn't cause brain damage and make it worse...

"Just try not to bleed on anything. Martha won't approve."

Des just rolls his eyes a little and throws an arm around her, pulling her a little bit closer while being careful not to spill either his drink or hers. Cuddles are nice, apparenty.

"Roger that, no bleeding or personal injury of any kind." He grins at her. "So. How's life at the Conrad?"

He does miss it, just a little. Hanging out in the common room, the general buzz of people around, occasionally popping in on a new face in the Rift room. Not that there's much of that anymore now that everyone's up in the Hotel Proper, but still.

We won't question why Des is making small talk with Kara. It's easier to do that and pretend there wasn't something wrong before and easier to avoid to thinking that something might be happening soon.
