You can't expect things to just fall in your lap... except when you can [Sydney]

Jun 25, 2008 00:20

See, the thing is, Will Tippin doesn't know what to do when his best friend asks for his sister's passport, says she can't explain, and leaves. So instead of doing whatever it is he should be doing, he's on his way home with ice cream and alcohol.

Well, he was. Except that something opens up under his feet, and when he steps forward, instead of ( Read more... )

Sydney's on painkillers now, but she's not incapacitated by any stretch of the imagination, and her first instinct when someone falls on her - especially considering what her life's been like recently - is to treat it as an attack.

Which is why she flips off the bed, taking Will with her, and lands sitting on his chest, one hand on his throat. And then she processes that she recognizes that voice, and he just called her Amy and... oh, crap.

"Will?"

Will gasps and coughs a bit, staring up at her in confusion and shock and trying vainly, for a moment, to process what just happened.

The hair screams 'Amy', of course, but the voice and the face...

He blinks a few times. "Syd? What are you... Why are... What happened to your hair?"

Sydney grimaces and backs off of him, getting to her feet and offering Will a hand up. "Sorry, I thought..."

All the things he could ask about and he thinks her hair is important?

"I... dyed it. It's not important." She really couldn't explain why - never mind that she's afraid to explain why, whatever Marshall's said about alternate universes.

Will takes the opportunity of being on his feet again to hug Sydney tightly. And then realizes that... being thumped on the floor like that kinda really hurt.

Whatever. Not important.

"Syd, you... ask for my sister's passport and say you can't explain and you just disappear and then I... fall through the street into some bedroom and land on you and you have your hair dyed like Amy's! What the hell is going on?"

Sydney takes the opportunity to hug him, almost as tightly. And then come the questions, and she releases him and steps back, grimacing again. This time for a different reason.

"I really... really can't explain, and I'm sorry, but just trust me, I had to. And I guess it doesn't really matter now, but I really am sorry." Yes, because that's going to be enough to keep Will from asking questions, but really, what is she supposed to say?

"If it doesn't matter now, why can't you tell me?" Will insists. Pauses. "And where the hell are we?"

Now he gets to the relevant questions.

Sydney laughs a little - not exactly in a cheerful way, more surprised and not-quite covering how broken she's feeling right now. That last one, at least, is a question she can answer.

"Chicago. We're in Chicago. You're not going to believe me when I tell you why."

"We're in Chicago?" Will asks incredulously.

Pauses. Glances over to the bed, where his paper bag of vodka and ice cream is sitting, somehow miraculously upright. "Am I going to need alcohol for this?"

Sydney gestures vaguely to the window in a "if you want to go look..." sort of way. And then she gets distracted, glancing to the bed with a little frown.

"You brought alcohol?" It's not like he knew he was coming here and therefore planned the alcohol... It's just a little strange that her best friend would fall on top of her, carrying a bottle of alcohol and everything. Not that she's complaining, because if the universe has suddenly decided to play nice with her...

"Vanilla vodka," Will says, and shifts from foot to foot for a moment, like he doesn't want to say the rest of... whatever he's going to say.

"Also a gallon of mint chocolate chip ice cream."

She should at least be happy about that.

Sydney just gives him a fond smile for a second. Will is occasionally a woman, but oh, she loves him. And she's not even going to question the fact that he has her favorite ice cream instead of his. Right now, even with the painkillers, her mouth hurts and ice cream would probably help.

"Okay." She sits down on the bed, legs folded under her, and gestures for Will to sit down too. "This is gonna... I want to make it clear I only got here earlier today and I don't understand it either, okay?"

"Right. Well, we can be confused together, then!" Will grabs the bag, pulls the bottle and the ice cream out... and stops.

"Wait. Do you have spoons? Or... a spoon?"

"Why would I have a spoon in a dorm room I haven't even been living in?" That would be a no. Sydney considers for a minute, and then holds out her hand, twitching her fingers a little. "Give me your wallet."

Because that inspires confidence. But hey, she got him to give her his sister's passport...

Will looks at her like she's insane (which she might be. Or he might be. Or they might be insane together. He's not sure at this point), but he pulls his wallet out of his pocket and hands it over.

"Is this, like... a really polite and subtle mugging?"

Sydney rolls her eyes as she takes the wallet. "I think I'd be the worst mugger in the world if it were. Though I don't know, you did give it to me..." She flips open the wallet and searches through it for something. "No, you asked for spoons, and since I don't want to go hunting around this place for a kitchen..."

She locates a library card, which is better than a credit card - he'd probably flail at her over that - and snaps it in half. Good enough. The wallet and one of the library card halves get handed back to Will.

...Yes, she really wants that damn ice cream right now.

Will stares at the half of a library card, and then back up at Sydney. It's on the tip of his tongue to ask what in the world she did that for when he gets it.

"Spoons. Sydney, whatever else you might be, you are a genius."

He's noticed that she's hurt. But he's not going to ask about it until she's have some alcohol. Maybe THEN she'll answer his questions.
