GLADYS, having gotten all her rage out in that little journal post, is in the back of the cafeteria, flour in her already gray hair and all the way up her arms to her rolled-up sleeves. She's had to throw out three batches of cookies for various problems, which is what happens when you bake while angry. The last batch turned out okay, though, which ( Read more... )

Lina apparently only exists when there is food around or so her narration has come to believe, so here she is creeping into the kitchen on tiptoe, fully intending to steal a cookie or two, for she hasn't eaten in the last twenty minutes and the cookies smell delicious.

Really, she doesn't have to be sneaky, but Lina always seems to assume that if there are people in the kitchen cooking, they don't want people stealing their food. So naturally Lina just doesn't let them know she's stealing their food.

....She's special.

Gladys has her back turned, but then realizes she needs another egg to make this batch just right, so she turns around to find...

"Oh. Hello!" she says. She's not surprised in the least- after all, it's cookies. And cookies are tasty, and food is good, especially considering what's been happening. So to have someone else eating the cookies is good, otherwise Gladys would have to eat them all by herself.

"Try the chocolate chip, I haven't had the chance to taste that yet," she tells the girl as she turns back around to crack the egg.

Lina wastes no time in making a dive for the chocolate chip- hey, she has the baker's blessing, who is she to argue?

"If I knew someone else around here was good in the kitchen, I would have found some way to bide my time between you and Dinah," she says, nibbling the cookie with glee. "This is delicious."

She finishes it off and goes for another, because the Bottomless Pit is never sated. "You picked the right person to test them, by the way. I'm sort of the unofficial food critic here."

Apparently, Dinah created a monster. A tiny, ginger monster with a canyon for a stomach.

Gladys blushes. "Why, thank you!" she says, stirring her newest batch busily. "I'm glad. You should have seen the first three batches. One was lumpy, one was BURNT and one was so dry I'm surprised they didn't just turn into dust." She taps the spatula she's been stirring with on the side of the bowl, then moves a clean cookie sheet close to the bowl.

"Well, I'm glad that I've got the food critic's stamp of approval!" she says, smiling as she spoons cookies out. When she's done, she gives the spoon a quick lick.

Yes, everyone. Have angel germs!

Thankfully, Lina is, you know, one of the definitions of rude in the name of food, so she doesn't mind that she licks the spoon- just pouty that she didn't get to do it. Mmmm... Batter. She hasn't been around someone baking since she was a kid.

Yeah, don't tell her she's still mostly a kid right now even if she is all of eighteen. She still looks fifteen though. Ohhh that height thing.

"You should be," Lina says proudly. "I have sensitive tastes. Not just anything will do."

Her boasting would be irritating if she didn't look so cute. Also, she's a liar. She'd eat things that are vaguely slimy if she thought they'd have a good taste.

Gladys grins, and hands over the bowl and a (clean) spoon.

"I can imagine," she says. "Try one of the sugar. You know, just to make sure they're proper quality." Because Gladys loves it so very much when people eat her cookies. It makes her happy to (hopefully) make them happy.

Therefore, she doesn't mind the boasting at all. She, in fact, takes it as a compliment. In a strange way.
