Mat is... well, not sure if Sam would like to talk to him, but he feels like he should check in. Or something. But he comes over anyway, hands shoved in his pockets, looking awkward as ever.
"Yeah!" Mat nods enthusiastically and actually grins goofily for a second before stifling that - hey, he's gotten laid and has a pretty girl sharing his room. He's happy, even if the fact that the person sharing his room is a girl is a little odd. "I just, y'know. Hadn't really seen you in... a while."
Sam smiles apologetically and gestures for Mat to take a seat. "Sorry. I've been a bit... busy." Torchwood will do that to you and any semblance of a life you had before. Torchwood owns it all now.
"No, it's okay!" Mat flops with all the grace of a very large Labrador puppy. "I just, y'know... I mean, you're my ward, I figure I should probably keep in touch, at least." Grin. He's joking, by the by.
"Probably." Sam pauses a moment, and then decides that it's only fair if Mat knows a few things. In advance. Like... not to completely freak out when the constant pain starts.
"You shouldn't be alarmed if I'm in a lot of pain at some point in the next few days. I'm being used as the Torchwood lie detector."
Sam sighs and shakes his head a little. "No. I'm sorry. If you want, I can have Juliet give you some painkillers. I'll be here at the hotel, so there's no chance I'll be actually injured, just in pain."
Sam pauses, considering. "As long as you're out of the way and quiet. We can't afford any distractions. I don't think you will be, I just need to warn you in advance."
"Um... hi."

Because the last time he asked that question (or something of the sort) it ended so well.

And he won't. He really won't, no matter how much he wants to.
