down the rabbit hole

General Daniel Jackson waits in the Atlantis gateroom as the Stargate dials M6Q-437, also known as New Aråmis, and double-checks his gear and P90 again. He does not go off base much anymore, not since the Wraith began their attacks in earnest, but he remembers his years at the SGC all too well. New Aråmis is supposed to be a secure planet, but the ( Read more... )

Just his luck - or her luck - that Maya happens to be checking the Rift room as he comes through, and it's definitely her luck that she always seems to get the armed ones. She can only hope that this man is as used to Rifts in space and time as the other one, not that she's holding out much hope for that.

She's already in the doorway when she sees him, sees the weapon, registers it as an automatic, and realises that if he wants her dead, she'll be dead before she can get away. So, as carefully as she can, she raises both hands to shoulder-level and shows her palms. "I'm unarmed."

Daniel looks her over, and is reasonably satisfied when he can't spot a weapon on her person. He lowers his P90 to point away from her, but keeps it at the ready. He still has no idea how he got here... maybe the wormhole jumped? He glances over his shoulder and is shocked to see that there is no Stargate. Instead there is a strange oscillating tear in the air itself that reminds him of an astronomical anomaly Colonel Carter was telling him about once.

"What is this place?" he demands of the woman, tightening his grip on the gun again. He really doesn't like not knowing what's happened to him, and this is no different.

Maya inhales. There's really no way to soften the blow.

"This is going to sound mad no matter how I say it," she says. "You've stepped through some sort of unexplained energy phenomenon we call the Rift. We don't know how or why, but it tends to collect people and spit them out here. And it's one-way; we can't send anything back. This is the basement of the Conrad Hotel in Chicago; we offer housing to the people who come through until we can discover a way to reverse it." She pauses. "I'm Detective Inspector Maya Roy, in from Manchester," she offers. "As there's no CID here, I'm functioning as the hotel's orientation officer."

While it's not at all what he expected, it's not too out of the ordinary for him. Although he's not sure if he's on his Earth, or an alternate reality. He's keeping his fingers crossed for his own Earth, but something in her voice says otherwise. Still, years of military service has trained him to keep his mouth shut about classified information, so he decides not to mention the SGC or Atlantis until he has confirmation. "Major-General Daniel Jackson, Egyptian Armed Forces," he introduces himself instead. He starts to ask who is in charge here, but it's a hotel, not a military base or an alien village. Despite years of dealing with brand-new alien planets and civilizations, he feels completely out of his element. What does one say about this sort of thing?
