Somehow, despite living an hour away from it all of my life, I'd never been to Coney Island before. Sara, Jay and I fixed that this weekend, with a trip to the NY Aquarium, the boardwalk and Nathan's!
Being used to the Jersey shore, I'm a bit perplexed by the idea of a boardwalk without games, but it was still enjoyable.
The aquarium part of the trip gave me a good opportunity to play with the new camera, so below are some of my best shots from the day. Sadly I did not get a picture of the crazy man breaking the ketchup dispenser, so you'll have to be happy with fish instead.
The aquarium has a pretty decent outdoor section. Seals, sea lions, a huge walrus and a sea otter which would not stay still to be photographed.
Seal!
Sealions!
They had a pretty large collection of seahorses and pipefish, including a very depressing exhibit about how they are killed and dried for the curio trade.
Pregnant Pot-bellied Seahorses
Since it's in NY, I'm guessing a lot of the specimens are collected locally. So if you're brave enough to go diving in the Hudson, you might find things that look like this:
Coldwater starfish
Coldwater anemone
Lots of strawberry anemones
coldwater biotope
There was some tropical stuff, though.
Rhinopias eschmeyeri scorpionfish. I love these guys.
Mushroom anemone tank
Caiman. Which I'm mostly sure was alive...
Amazonian leaf fish
Pajama Cardinal fish
Tomato Clown tank. the aquarium had so many of these guys they must have been on sale or something.
Face of a huge electric eel
Jellyfish
Yellow tang and rose bubble tip anemones
Male Squareblotch Anthias
And back outside again for Penguins!
And since we were in Coney Island, we couldn't leave without a trip on the Cyclone.
Not for people with neck problems. Seriously.
