✗ “If you are so sad that you cannot go on, erase my existence.” He tells him. Yoite tells Miharu that he is happy, and he’s smiling at him again. “I want you to grant my wish so you can smile and laugh in the future.”
Minutes later, Yoite dies in Miharu’s arms.
He doesn’t get to grant Yoite’s wish. He doesn’t get to save himself from the heartache of losing the person he cares for most, and he doesn’t get to become the king of Nabari.
Miharu is taken back to Paradisim - a place that up until his return he had thought was just a very, very happy dream - and Yoite is still dead.
Miharu hates everything.
He refuses to do much of anything for several weeks, only bothering to talk to Lyserg (a boy who he also hated, but maybe he could forgive him now, because they both failures, both liars and they had both lost people they were never meant to lose--) every so often, or when the boy dropped by. He wouldn't eat. There was nothing left for him; being brought back to the city was meaningless without Yoite, and the timing had been so awful, so completely wrong and horrible.
"I want you to grant my wish so you can smile and laugh in the future." Smile? Miharu could barely feel anything.
...and then the city did one of the only truly kind things it had ever done for anyone.
It brought Yoite back to him.
Time went on, and Miharu often refused to leave Yoite's side no matter the circumstances, no matter if it meant death or something equally awful. He made a deal with a witch named Yuuko and gave Yoite his sight in one eye (which resulted in heterochromia, as well as blindness) and his sense of taste. He would do anything, anything to improve Yoite's quality of life, anything to make it right, make his time in the city happy, because there was nothing left after this for them. He claimed that his eye had been injured during one of the maze events - not a farfetched thought, considering the scars on his chest from when the Heartless had come - and kept it covered with bandages so that Yoite never found out about it. The only people aware of it were Lyserg and Yuuko; Yuuko as the cause, and Lyserg as the alibi.
One day, they both fell asleep, and when they woke up the city was hundreds of years older, even though it felt like no time had gone by at all. And, really, it didn't change anything.
Miharu still spent all his time with Yoite, still taunted Lyserg and Ren (that pointy-haired idiot) on occasion, still made comments about Lyserg and Jeanne... he continued to do so until Yoite disappeared again, an he was left alone once more.
Miharu has barely spoken to anyone since.
