Does Language Shape How You Think, from this week's Times magazine rings especially true in its discussion of gendered nouns. I was fluently bilingual for many years, I've studied four languages formally, and have picked up bits of French from my time in Montreal, but I'm still a native Anglophone and the hardest thing for me to remember in any language is consistently the genders of various nouns.
