BACKGROUND: Riku was born on a small island in the Florida Keys, and for the most part his childhood was uneventful. However, as the years went by, curiosity grew into a sort of wanderlust. His island home was nice, but he wanted to know what else was out there; what lurked behind that boundary of water surrounding the island. At the age of 15, he finally got his wish when his powers first kicked in, whisking him away from the island in a flare of darkness.

Given that his parents had little idea their son was a mutant (and likely still don’t) they naturally assumed he’d either gotten himself lost or stowed away on some boat somewhere. However, when the police repeatedly managed to turn up neither hide nor hair of him, even after several months of searching they had no choice but assume him dead.

Riku, of course, had no idea of this. The portal he’d made had catapulted him far from his island home, and promptly dropped him in the middle of nowhere. Or in this case, Centralia, Pennsylvania. Compared to what he’d seen on his island and had assumed of other places the sheer emptiness caught him off guard, and he spent a fair amount of time simply wandering around the empty streets in a state of mild confusion. In the long run, it probably wasn’t the best of ideas, as unbeknownst to him the town was not entirely empty. Hidden deep within still-smouldering ruins was the last inhabited building, inhabited by a man calling himself the ‘Seeker of Darkness’.

Under the guise of helping him understand and control his newly developed powers he slowly worked his way into Riku’s good graces, turning him against everything he’d once cared for before quite simply taking control of Riku’s mind. After all, Riku’s powers were so very close to the darkness that he’d taken such an interest in and what better way to have them at his disposal? Needless to say, what followed was nothing the Riku would have done had he been himself as he dove ever deeper into his darkness.

Fortunately, help was just on the horizon. Ever since Riku had first left the island, Sora had been looking for him, and after nearly a year of looking he’d finally come across the Seeker’s not-quite-underground base. Unfortunately, by that point Riku no longer looked like the young man who’d left the island thanks to the final ability of his powers. Not that this stopped Sora from metaphorically and literally beating sense to him.

His beating at the hands of Sora also had the convenient effect of breaking the mindcontrol he’d been under. Forced to suddenly come to terms with everything he’d down while under mindcontrol, Riku apologized to Sora before disappearing into the darkness once again.

This time he landed just on the outskirts of a town that he never bothered to get the name of, fully intent on living out in the wilderness for the rest of his days. It was while he was exploring his new ‘home’ that he came across DiZ. For a given definition of ‘came across’ since the first he heard of DiZ was nothing more than a voice in his head. It wasn’t the most comforting of things, especially after his recent experience and Riku decided to hunt this voice down. Along the way, DiZ helped him come to some very important decisions.

And yet, when Riku finally met up with DiZ he flatly refused to return home looking as he did. DiZ suggested Xavier’s school as an alternative, and while Riku had to admit it was an nice idea he still refused to be seen in public looking as he did. This didn’t stop DiZ, who returned with one last suggestion. An image inducer, tuned to look like Riku would have. Riku took him up on that offer, and so armed, he was off to Xavier’s school.
PERSONALITY: Up until the point when he first left the island, Riku was cocky, a bit of a jerk and something of competitive streak. Of course, this wasn’t to say he didn’t care for his friends - he did, albeit in his own odd way. It was just that he’d always taken them for granted, since nothing had really come up to challenge that. Sadly, he wasn’t exactly the most patient - and didn’t have any problems in go far past his limits. When his powers first manifested, he stared into to the dark unflinchingly (and without worrying about the effect his leaving might have had on his friends).

Unfortunately for him, that competitive streak proved to hurt more than it helped, as it was slowly corrupted into jealousy and anger over the course of his time spent with Ansem, turning him against friends and foes alike.

However, the Riku who will be arriving at the X-Mansion is a changed Riku. After spending a year more-or-less on his on his own he’s come to the conclusion that his friends mean far more to him than he’d originally thought. It’s not the only change he’s made. Gone is the cocky teen from when he first left the island (although glimpses of him still show through from time to time). In his place stands a Riku who will protect his friends to his dying breath and believes there’s no good enemy to lose to.

And yet at the same time he prefers to distance himself from those same friends. And... pretty much everyone else, actually. It’s partly a case of once burned, twice shy and partly the fact that he doesn’t want anyone to know how he still looks, and while he’s getting better at being careful with his darkness he’s still not entirely comfortable with what he can do (and has done) with it. In short, he has Issues.
APPEARANCE: Despite all that’s happened to him over the year or so since he left the islands, Riku still looks more or less like he did when he first left the islands. In this case, like your average teenager with a not-so-average hair color - in this case silver, thanks to a side-effect of his powers. He could probably also stand a hair cut, although he doesn’t seem to mind his hair getting into his eyes.

However, thanks to a series of unfortunate events, he’s currently stuck in a form that’s not his own. Or at least, one that’s not usually his own. (It is part of his abilities. Just a part he can’t ‘fix’ yet.) Somewhat unfortunately for him it’s one that’s far easier to spot in a crowd. Part of this is due to the fact that it leaves him more than a bit tall for his age; the rest is due to the odd coloring it grants him - dark skin, pure white hair, and orangeish yellow eyes. Not a form his family or friends would easily recognize him in, and not one he likes to admit to being in.

But since he can’t face himself in the form he’s stuck in, much less anyone else, he uses an image inducer to look like the teenager he should be.
POWERS: Riku’s abilities grant him control over both darkness and light. It’s fairly versatile too - he can create blasts of dark energy as well as ‘shields’ of darkness and a sword-like weapon (he calls it Soul Eater, although it should be noted it doesn’t actually eat souls). He can also teleport through the darkness, for a lack of a better term. At the higher levels he can summon a sort of guardian made out of darkness as well as take the form he’s currently in (which increases his abilities to use the darkness at the cost of making light harder to use), but hasn’t made use of either one since he regained control of his own mind. Also of note is the fact that he doesn’t seem to need light in order to be able to see, and that he can ‘smell’ both light and dark.

As of his arrival at the Institute, he is unable to do much with his light, save for using it to turn his weapon into a form he calls ‘Way to the Dawn’. However he will eventually have as much control over it as he does the darkness and will some day be able to use it to return to his original form.

ANYTHING ELSE?: Apart from using an image inducer to hide the fact that he’s still stuck in his Rikunort form, he’s also surprisingly good at imitating voices.
