CHAPTER 20
“So, this is finally goodbye… Mirai.”
‘Can I really say goodbye and let go of her hands? Can I really just say goodbye like this? Can I really live without you beside me?’ These were the questions that were swarming in his mind ever since he came back to Miyu’s room.
He was still having his inner, mental battle with himself when he received a call from a frantic Suzuka-chan earlier…
*FLASHBACK*
Ryosuke then placed his hands over his face to cover his red, puffed eyes and his pink-tipped nose that resulted from too much crying. He then looked up at the skies afterwards before saying in a soft and gentle voice…
“So, this is finally goodbye… Mirai.”
He decided that it was better to finally bring her back home, because for all the times they were together, all he did was give her heartache after heartache.
He was still wiping his seemingly unstopping tears when his phone vibrated and he wouldn’t have answered it if not for the caller.
“S-Suzuka? Wh--”
“Yamada-kun! Miyu! Miyu! She’s--”
And without letting her finish whatever it was she wanted to say, he ran towards the hospital to where Miyu was.

“What happened?” he was in panic the moment he entered Miyu’s hospital room. There were nurses inside assisting the doctor that was tending to her, while Suzuka was looking so pale as she stood staring at Miyu on the bed.
“I--I… I don’t… She… She woke up suddenly and shouted… s-something… She looked like she was in pain and she just lost consciousness… Yamada-kun… Miyu…” Suzuka looked back at Ryosuke who seemed also glued to his spot.
“What could have happened to her? S-she… Yamada-kun, will she be okay?” she asked as she walked closer to Ryosuke and looked at him with eyes full of worry… and fear.
“I’m scared for her… Yamada-kun, you will protect her, won’t you?”
Her words rung in his ears as if an echo… He looked at Suzuka who was now trying hard not to cry while looking at Miyu who was still unconscious.
‘Will I be able to protect her? Will I be able to take away her pain?’ he thought.
“Yamada-kun, she was calling for you… She was looking for you… I think, you’re the one she needs right now. You’re the only one who can protect her right now…” Suzuka said softly.
“What happened?!” it was Chinen and Umika who suddenly entered the room and they looked flustered as if they ran from a distance to get there.
Suzuka was about to tell them what happened when the door suddenly opened again followed by a worried Yuto. And upon seeing the guy, Suzuka suddenly frowned and clenched her fists.
“Mirai…” he whispered as he came closer to them.
“What happened? What’s happening to her? She was--”
“Nakajima… Who really are you?” Suzuka then spoke in a deep, somewhat angry voice that took everyone by surprise. Especially Yuto.
“Suzu-chan?” Umika called her softly and tried to touch her but before she was able to do it, Suzuka spoke once again.
“Nakajima… I want to talk to you.” and with that she walked out the room. And Yuto, who was still a bit shocked from how he was treated, couldn’t do anything else but to follow.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
“Miyu… I…” need you.
Ryosuke was sitting beside Miyu’s bed as he was holding her hand like it was his lifeline.
“Ryo…?” he sighed deeply the moment he heard her voice. Mariya.
“The doctor said that she must be too stressed from over-thinking. And it won’t be good if she keeps pushing herself to remember. Mariya, please--”
“You know my answer, right? And you already said that you’re going to keep her from hurting even more. Ryo, I’m going to take her back. It’s for Mirai and your own good. Being together, you’re only bound to hurt one another…”
“…I won’t let her get hurt, even if it kills me; I’m willing to take every pain if it’s for her.”
Ryosuke again heard his words to Mariya back then. Right now, he was still in a battle with himself. And to be honest, he really don’t know what to do… He was having a dilemma of what would be the best thing that he could do for Miyu...
‘I’m going to bring her back home as I promised, and even if it means pushing her away from me then so be it. It’s better for her to leave me hurting alone, than to make her stay and make her fall deeper for someone who can’t even protect and fight for her.’
‘Was it right to give her back to the family whom she don’t even recognize as of the moment? Was it right to push her away when right now, it was him the she needs the most? Was it right to make her hate him just so she can go home? Will bringing her back home make her happy?’ This were the questions he was asking himself.
“...I can take care of your sister. I learned from you. And don’t worry… I won’t let her get hurt, even if it kills me; I’m willing to take every pain if it’s for her.”
‘The words I said to Mariya back then, can I really live up to it? Will I be able to take care of Miyu? Will I be able to protect her and fight for her? Will I be able to keep her from hurting? And will she stay by me? Will she be happy just being with me?’ He can’t help but have these thoughts in mind right then.
His heart seemed like it was about to burst. He didn’t know that the moment he’ll open his heart to someone again, it’ll hurt him as much as this. He was scared both of losing Miyu and of having her… He was unsure if he could make her happy.
“Why can’t loving her be enough? Why do we have to go through all of this? Why do we have to get hurt? Why can’t we just love and be happy? Why can’t you just let us be together?” he asked Mariya weakly as he held Mirai’s hand tightly.
“Ryo, life isn’t as simple as you think it is… It’s not always a happy ending… And love sometimes is not enough…” she paused as she stared at his back lovingly.
‘If love was enough, I wouldn’t have had to let you go…’ Mariya thought as she breathed in deep.
“Ryo, she isn’t Miyu. She is Shida Mirai, my sister, Yuto’s fiancee, our company’s acting CEO… She’s a genius and at her age she can handle a world renowned business with no difficulty. She’s decisive, firm, and disciplined, she doesn’t need to ask anyone for help cause she can decide for herself whenever and she knows how to prioritize things accordingly and she doesn’t have time for trivialities. She’s strong, she doesn’t need protection and would never want to be thought of as weak. Ryo, Mirai and the Miyu you fell in love with are two exact opposites! And Miyu is not--”
“You’re right… Miyu and Mirai are exact opposites. But can’t you see? The Shida Mirai you’re talking about isn’t here. She’s Miyu… she’s intelligent yes, but she sometimes acts stupidly and does things without thinking. She’s clumsy and she loves to daydream, and she’s often confuse about what to do but she always ends up doing what she think is right for everyone. She might not be strong because she usually cries and gets emotional with just the silliest things, but she ain’t weak as well cause when it comes to people she holds dear, she can be really strong to speak up her mind and fight for them. The person right here is Miyu…”
Ryosuke said without even taking a glance at Mariya. All this time he was staring at the sleeping Miyu while holding her hand. And with this, if it was even possible, Mariya had heard her heart be broken again into a millions pieces that fixing it back again would be impossible.
“U-Until when, Ryosuke? Until when will she be that Miyu?” Mariya didn’t even notice that her tears were already falling…
“I don’t know… But until then, until she decides that she no longer wanted to be by my side… Will you allow us to be together?” and with that Ryosuke looked back at Mariya who was silently crying behind him. Then as slowly and as gently as he could, he held her hand and said,
“Just until she’s Miyu, will you let me be selfish and be with her? Just until Miyu knows and remembers me, will you let us be together? Please, just until then… Will you let us be happy?”

“Chinen-sama… Will Miyu be okay? W-Will Yamada-kun be…” Umika suddenly looked at Chinen when she felt him put his hands on top of her head.
“Don’t worry… Miyu’s pretty strong and stubborn, so she’ll be okay. As for Yama-chan… Let’s hope he’ll be stronger ne. Stronger for the both of them.” he said as he smiled at her. They were currently at the hospital’s cafeteria, they went there when Mariya came in the room just as the doctor said that Miyu’s condition was already stable.
“I wish Yamada-kun will now realize how important Miyu is to him and not take for granted the times they’re together…” Umika spoke as she looked at Chinen who was also staring back at her.
They didn’t know how long they were staring at each other then, but they immediately looked away as their faces flushed deep red when Chinen’s phone suddenly rang.
“Y-Yes? Hello?... Eh? Dad?! Yeah, she’s in her room with Yama-chan right now… Wait… What?!”

“Suzuka-san, right?” Yuto asked the moment the girl who wanted to talk to him stopped in her tracks. They were in the hospital rooftop right now and he didn’t know why but he felt like this girl has some kind of a grudge on him.
‘But she was really kind earlier…’ he though. But before he could ask or say anything else, she then turned around to face him with a look that was surely of suspicion.
“Who really are you? And what do you know about Mirai’s accident? And is it even an accident to begin with?” Suzuka said while glaring at him.
Yuto the frowned and stared back at the girl with pure confusion, ‘What is she talking about?’
“Wait… I don’t really know--”
“Who the heck is Nakajima Raito?”
At that name, Yuto’s frown deepened and he began to walk closer to Suzuka with menacing eyes.
“What do you know?”
