“All for Love”
Chapter 19
Ryosuke was sitting on one of the benches near the hospital grounds. Mariya already left him to go home and personally tell their father that Miyu-or Mirai-is still alive.
An hour had already passed since Umika and Chinen saw him with Mariya inside the ice cream shop, but his mind was still stuck thinking about what actually happened. He sighed before rubbing his hands on his face in frustration.
“What are you doing, Yamada Ryosuke?! What do you plan on doing?! Sh*t!” he just exclaimed as he kicked off a stone on the ground.
Then he remembered what had happened in the shop before Umika and Chinen got to them.
*FLASHBACK*
They were just a few more strides away from the ice cream shop when Mariya stopped in her tracks.
“This is going to be about Mirai, right?” she said her voice cracking as she spoke. Ryosuke didn’t even glance her way when he answered,
“Yes.”
He felt her sigh heavily then he just felt her hands encircle his as she pulled her into the ice cream shop.
“I’ll answer everything you ask after this… Just give me some of your time, Ryo. Even just this while…” she said sadly.
Mariya immediately ordered one cup of strawberry ice cream and one cup of coffee ice cream.
After ordering, they quietly sat down on an empty table and started eating their ice cream. No one dared speak, it was already awkward that two ex-lovers were sitting together and eating ice cream. But it was more awkward that this time, you’re sitting together with your ex who is also the sister of your current love.
“I really hate coffee…” this made Ryosuke glance at the girl beside her, and he wasn’t able to stop himself from smiling on her remark.
He remembered how she usually says that she hates coffee, but it was always the flavor she’ll order every time. He even remembers the time when he asked her why she’d order coffee when she’d claim to hate it.
“Because I know that you’ll eventually share some of your ice cream with me… And even if it’s your favorite, you’ll allow me to eat it, and we’ll end up sharing on the same cup afterwards… Isn’t it much sweeter like that, ne Ryo?”
“You haven’t change at all…” he said after a while, making Mariya smile. He remembered how she used to smile for him like that, sweet and genuine.
“I know, Ryo. I’m still the pretty Mari! Hehe.”
“Still conceited as ever, are we?”
“Oh stop it, you know I’m just telling the truth! You used to compliment me before, right?”
“Right… That was when I was still in your spell, Ms. Witch… Hahaha.”
“Eh~ So mean… But really! Look at me, what can you say now? I do look better, right?” Mariya even fluttered her eyes jokingly at Ryosuke.
“Yeah yeah, fine. You do look better but just a bit. Hahaha. I look even gorgeous anyway…” he answered laughing.
“There… At least now you’re laughing. I missed seeing you like that, Ryo. I miss you…” she said with a smile, he smiled back. But it was obvious in both their eyes that there was still sadness.
Ryosuke does admit that he missed being with her. He missed her. It really wasn’t easy to just forget her like that. She was his first love and his first heartache after all.
He used to curse her; he even despised having to hear her name or even see her photos on the magazines or even glance at her posters on SHINE’s store branches.
She changed him to be Yamada Ryosuke the Player. She changed everything that he is and was the moment she left him. And he hated that.
Ryosuke dawned in the realization that everything he felt for her was all in the past. Yes, it was true that he WAS in love with her. He LOVED her. And he DID hate her when she left him. He really HATED her. But none of those feelings exists anymore.
Right now, whenever he looks at the girl beside him… All he could think of is that Shida Mariya is the sister of the woman he loves, and that is Miyu… Shida Mirai.
She’s not his ex-girlfriend or the girl who left him anymore… She’s just Shida Mariya. And right then, Ryosuke felt free. And it was all thanks to Miyu for freeing him of that painful and suffocating past.
At least now, he could finally accept everything that had happened.
“Here, you can have some…” he said making the girl smile widely before scooping up some of his strawberry ice cream.
“I love strawberry!” she exclaimed still smiling.
“Shut up, Mari… You hate strawberry, you just love ice cream so much that whatever the flavor is, you’re sure to eat it! Hahaha.”
“You know me too well, Ryo…”
“It’s because you never change. You’re still… Mariya.”
The girl smiled while looking at him straight into his eyes, and he had to look away right then.
Yes, he was still the same Mariya he fell in love with. But it wasn’t the same anymore, because right now his feeling for her weren’t there anymore… That even when she confessed that she still loves him, he can’t say the same to her then.
“I guess something did change… You’ve become fatter.” He suddenly said in a serious manner. This made the girl scoff, the after a second or two, both of them laughed out loud. Like how they used to laugh together before.
“Whatever Ryo. Anyway, you have some ice cream left on the corners of your mouth. Sheesh. You’re such a baby!”
Ryosuke was stunned but he immediately wiped his face with the tissue she gave him.
“How can you take care of my dear little sister when you can’t even take care of yourself, huh?” Mariya softly said still with her sweet smile not leaving her lips. She looked at Ryosuke who was staring seriously at her.
“I can’t afford to let you hurt my little sister, Ryo… I’m sorry but I’ll have to get her back… Even if it means breaking your heart again.”
She said those words in her authoritative voice. And Ryosuke knew right then that more that anything else, more than him, her sister would always come first for Mariya.
“I’m not that young, naïve, and childish Ryosuke you used to be with anymore. You’ve taught me a lot of things, Mariya… You’ve taught me first hand how to take care of myself when you left me. So, I guess I can take care of your sister. I learned from you. And don’t worry… I won’t let her get hurt, even if it kills me; I’m willing to take every pain if it’s for her.”
He said as he gently held her face and wiped some of the excess ice cream off the corner of her lips.
“You devil! What do you think you’re doing, huh?!”
Both of them were stunned to see Umika before them. She even threw aside the vase adorned with flowers on their center table.
In an instant, Ryosuke wrapped his arms around Mariya protectively. He knew he should protect her… Because whatever happens or happened, she’s still Mirai’s sister.
“Yama-chan, what’s this?” Chinen, who came after Umika, asked in his deep voice.
“Look Chii, it’s not what you think okay? I just needed to talk to her about Miyu…” he answered but he can’t even look into Chinen’s eyes.
He knew it was childish of him to actually run away and throw a fit just because he saw Yuto and Mirai together. He can’t look at his bestfriend and make him see how he’s still immature as how he calls him.
“Oh really? That’s what you call talking?! Eating in an ice cream shop, being all sweet and even wiping each other’s faces off?! Who the heck are you kidding, huh?!” Umika yelled; she was almost on the verge of tears. It was clear how she was hurting for her friend. And Ryosuke can’t look at her then.
“Umika…” Chinen tried to calm the girl but she just wouldn’t back down.
“I thought you’ve changed, Yamada Ryosuke. I thought you wouldn’t hurt, Miyu. But look at what you’re doing? You’re happily spending this day with your ex-girlfriend, Miyu’s supposedly sister, while Miyu… While Miyu’s suffering in the hospital alone!”
Ryosuke was about to break. He loves Miyu-Mirai-but he can’t stay in the hospital then, not now! Not after seeing Yuto hug her like that, not after seeing Miyu cry into his arms like that, and not after seeing how they obviously longed for each other even with her memories gone.
Ryosuke tried to calm down but he was so confused as to what he should do. He wanted to be with Miyu but it seemed that even fate goes against them.
Because just after admitting their feelings to one another, problems after problems kept arising and it was eating him up whole. He didn’t know what to do or think anymore. However he wanted to fight for her, he just can’t seem to find the ways to do it.
And he’s even more scared thinking that even if he does fight for her, will she also do the same for him? What if she’ll just leave him like what Mariya did? To think that she appears to be so attached to that Yuto already that she doesn’t seem to need him anymore.
He was confused, hurt, and scared… And before he can stop himself, he was already shouting back at Umika.
“She’s not alone! She’s with that Yuto, okay?! Can’t you see? She’s with Yuto… She’s with someone else already… And it doesn’t seem to me like she needs me anymore… I-“
“You jerk! How would you know if she needs you or not when you’re busy flirting with this witch! You know what, Yamada Ryosuke? I guess it’s better if Miyu will just wake up and remember everything… It’s better if she’ll just get back with Yuto! Because someone like you doesn’t deserve her! She doesn’t deserve a weak guy like you who only thinks of himself…!” Umika was already crying while saying this, then she started walking away when she stopped and went back at them.
“One more thing…”
She grabbed the cup of melted ice cream by their table and threw it at Mariya, but Ryosuke was fast to cover her and instead it was him who got drenched.
“You deserve that.” And she ran away as fast as she could leaving Ryosuke, Mariya, and Chinen standing there dumbfounded.
“Chii, please listen… I-“
“Enough, Ryo… I guess I’d have to agree with Umika with this one. You really do deserve this. You can’t blame anyone else for this mess, because everything that’s happening now is because of your decisions. If you’ll lose Miyu, then it wouldn’t be because of her, or Yuto, or even Mariya… It’s because you’re so weak and so stupid that you didn’t even fight for her. You’re too weak that you didn’t even try fighting for her…”
After saying that, Chinen also left. Ryosuke’s arms around Mariya then dropped lifeless on his side… And he felt just like that, lifeless.
“Ryo… I’m sorry. I just wanted to-“ Mariya tried to touch him but he moved away, then he shook his head hopelessly.
He looked at Mariya and he can’t even get himself to say anything or do anything, he just felt dead. Everything they said hit him like an arrow on fire. It hit him directly and painfully in his chest’s core.
Weak. That’s what he is. He can’t even fight anymore, he felt that this is a losing battle anyway. And that proved them right. He is a weakling, and whatever happens… When Miyu leaves him, it would be no one else’s fault but his alone.
He was still too weak and too scared. He was still that Yamada Ryosuke, the young, naïve, and childish Yamada. He was still and will be the weak and immature Yamada Ryosuke that can’t even fight for something he longs to have. His love.
His eyes started to water as he finally came into a decision that would break him to bits. Just thinking about it shatters him to the very core. But then, it’s the only way he can prove that somehow he also has the will to fight. He then remembered his words to Mariya,
“…I won’t let her get hurt, even if it kills me; I’m willing to take every pain if it’s for her.”
I’m going to bring her back home as I promised, and even if it means pushing her away from me then so be it. It’s better for her to leave me hurting alone, that to make her stay and make her fall deeper for someone who can’t even protect and fight for her. Ryosuke thought as he stared into Mariya’s eyes before speaking,
“I guess they’re right… Miyu doesn’t deserve someone like me… I think it’s about time to finally bring her back home.” He said as his eyes and voice was drowned in pained and uncalled tears.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
Ryosuke then placed his hands over his face to cover his red, puffed eyes and his pink-tipped nose that resulted from too much crying. He then looked up at the skies afterwards before saying in a soft and gentle voice…
“So, this is finally goodbye… Mirai.”
