He didn't get it, did he? I didn't want anything to happen to me while working here. I didn't want anything to happen to me at all... But the fact was that every day, we went and fought something new. Whether that was icky boil covered demons or papercuts from hell at Hell Incorporated? I was here and I was staying.
"I remember. I remember saying those things, but that's the abridged version. I was angry. Angry at you for not letting us know sooner about what the visions were really doing to you and angry at the Powers for being the ones who were killing you. Killing you. Cordy, I was so afraid of losing you or even that you were in the smallest bit of pain. You were alone and I felt helpless when it came to bringing you back."
The abridged version. It made sense, I guess. It had served Skip's purpose in the long run, made me think that Angel thought all of that stuff - spoilt little rich girl from Sunnydale. And yet he'd been afraid of losing me.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, tried to remember where we'd messed it up, where it had all gone wrong, and asked him the one question I hadn't stopped thinking of since the minute I'd got back.
"Do you ever think that... If we'd met up that night, things would be different?"
"All the time, Cordy, there is a day that night doesn't cross my mind."
So where did that leave us? I thought, holding his gaze. Did that mean we could move on from here? Or were Angel and I over before we'd even begun? "Angel--"
I started to tell him that I wasn't going anywhere, that if he wanted me, I was still his... But the door opened. It was like a pattern round here. Angel and I just started getting somewhere and--
"Miss Cordy! Mister Angel! There's a human lornedemon and he aint green!"
Okay, so I couldn't be mad at Alicia. She was too cute for that. Nor could I be mad at Daddy!Wes who was walking in behind the kids, looking sheepish as usual. "Hey Wesley." I smiled, scooping Alicia up into my arms. "And hey to you two, too. What's all this about a Lornedemon?"
Lorne-- "Lorne?" My gaze went to Wesley's. "Lorne's not green?" Oh God. This was the something Angel had talked about, wasn't it? Wolfram and Hart had turned him blue or something, hadn't they? God.
From the looks of it, we were once again barging into a very important Cordelia - Angel conversation. That seemed to be another job I've acquired when Cordy came back - and yes, I'm still stunned about that one, I mean she *died*. Sighing, I glanced down at Marilee who was clinging onto my leg again, but at least didn't look so afraid as she did whenever anyone else was around.
"No, no!" Alicia insisted. She planted her fists in her sides and glared up at Angel. "God, how did you become the boss around here?" Rolling her eyes, she turned toward Cordelia and nodded frantically. "See?" She jabbed her finger accusingly at Angel. "She gets it!"
Picking up Marilee, I walked over to the pair and then sat her down in the big office chair. "Alicia, you and I are going to have a talk about manners later on," I sighed, giving her another stern look.
"Sorry," she muttered, inspecting her nails. Which in her case might also be a subtle hint for Cordelia to tell her she needed her nails done. Well no, Alicia wasn't that bad. She was a good girl at heart. I smiled at her and put my hand on her shoulder giving it a soft squeeze.
"We's painted the lownedemons mirrow, and he's not gween," Marilee pipped up, looking quite proud that she had effectively explained the situation.
"Right," I nodded, because well, that part was true. "It's a bit confusing but uhm..." Taking a deep breath I glanced from Cordelia to Angel. "Apparently one of Lorne's demon clients turned him into a human. Fred and I found him and Fred uhm....questioned him..."
"...Girl power!" Alicia nodded. "She slapped him silly." The look on her face showed that she wasn't entirley certain what she thought about that.
"...Errr...right. She took it upon herself to get some answers. And we thought it might be best if you looked into it, Angel. Use your uhm..." I winced and glanced down at the girls. I was going to have to explain things to them soon. "...special talents to make certain that the person we think is Lorne, really is Lorne."
Marilee tugged on Cordy's hand and looked up at her seriously. "He wooked very afwaid. And the woman don't like us much...I thwink."
Frowning down at Miss 'Let's Insult Angel' I looked back at Cordy then Wes. "L-Lorne? What's wrong with Lorne?" Between Marilee's explainations of the mirror and a non-green Lorne and Wesley finally telling us what exactly was going on, I think I was more confused now than when I thought it was just some 'lornedemon'.
Apparently, Fred had taken it upon herself to beat answers out of a ..human Lorne? Raising a brow, I crossed my arms over my chest. "Lorne's.. human?" And one of his clients did this to him? Perking up, I looked at Wesley again. "Um, which client was this exactly?" From the looks I got from both Wesley and Cordy I shook my head. "Nevermind." Besides, I'd been there done that and we all know how that turned out in the end.
I cleared my throat and frowned yet again. My special talents? "You want me to bi-.." I stopped and looked looked at the girls. "I mean you want me to.." What special talent could I have to see if he was really Lorne or not? "Oh! That 'special' talent. Right, I guess that would work.." Hopefully.
"So, Lorne is with.. Fred?" Fred was scaring Lorne? That normally only happened when Fred had been in her 'crazy' phase.
My gaze flickered back and forth between Angel and Wesley, trying to understand exactly what it was they weren't saying in front of the children.
Lorne wasn't green any more, I got that part. Check.
They'd painted his mirror? Huh? And Alicia thought that *I* was the clever one around here? Geez.
"It's a bit confusing but uhm... Apparently one of Lorne's demon clients turned him into a human. Fred and I found him and Fred uhm....questioned him..."
"Lorne's human?" I repeated, my gaze going to the door. So what, he was hiding now? What did a little being human hurt, I mean I'd been human all my life... Almost.
"We thought it might be best if you looked into it, Angel. Use your uhm... special talents to make certain that the person we think is Lorne, really is Lorne."
I took in Angel's horrified glance, the way he cleared his throat. Wait, wait-- Wesley wanted him to bite Lorne? As in with the teeth?
"Y'know, you could always just get him to render us deaf with the Star Spangled Banner," I offered, after Wesley told us that Lorne was with Fred, "I'd know those pipes anywhere."
It was weird but since I'd been back? Lorne hadn't had much of a reason to sing any more. Weird and... Kinda sad.
"Mister Angel's a sniffing dog," Alicia said quite serious.
I looked down at her startled, wondering what she was thinking by being so insulting. "Alicia!" I said, rather shocked. "You will apologize to Angel right away." Shaking my head, I looked up at Angel apologetic.
"Huh?" Alicia looked at me dumbfound. "Why? You said it!" She crossed her arms over her chest and looked close to tears.
And now I was confused. When had I said such a thing? I'd never say such a thing. Then there was a tug on my hand and I glanced down at Marilee. Grouching down at I looked at questionably.
"You swaid he was gwoing to smell Lorwne," she whispered.
Oh. Oh! Good god, they'd heard that? I made a mental note to be extra careful when little ears were around. I glanced over at Alicia who was sticking out her bottom lip, fists clenched and staring at the floor. Dammit. I was going to have to talk to her later. We had things to do now. Sighing, I stood up again, putting my hand on Alicia's shoulder and squeezing it a little. She leaned into me tiredly, burying her face in my side.
"Right," I nodded seriously. "We'd like you to uhm...smell him, to make sure he's Lorne and not some impostor. And," I started, turning to face Cordelia. "He did sing." Or tried too.
"Bwoody awful," Marilee said solemnly, looking at us all with those doe eyes of hers.
I stared down at her for a moment, wondering when in gods name she picked *that* up. "Yes, quite," I agreed, clearing my throat again. "Anyway, we should hurry. I don't wish to leave them alone for too long." I hope it didn't come off as though I didn't trust Fred. But the way she'd been acting had been very odd. Had she been doing that a lot lately? Not as though I'd know. To busy with the girls.
"Can we stay here?" Alicia asked quietly, looking up at me pleadingly.
"Uhm..." I'd rather not leave them here on their own. And I'm sure both Cordelia and Angel wanted to come along. Or I'd have left them with Cordy, she and Angel were about the only ones I trusted with the girl. "I'm sorry, love. I don't want the two of on your own in this firm. But we'll make it quick alright?" I looked up at Cordelia and Angel again, nodding toward the door.
My mouth hung open for a second as I stared down at Alicia. She thought I was a dog? A *dog*? Or maybe she wasn't serious. Was she serious? Of course, maybe being a.. dog.. was better than her thinking I was a vampire. Then again she did see Lorne in all his green glory.
Giving Wesley a pointed look, I titled my head a bit at him when Alicia accused him of saying that I was a.. dog.
"You swaid he was gwoing to smell Lorwne."
I looked at Marilee and raised a brow. Wesley sure does now how to keep a secret around here, doesn't he? "Yes, why don't I run over and use my 'special talent' to sniff Lorne or whoever he is." Sniffing, I don't sniff. "We don't sniff, we sense," I mumbled and crossed my arms over my chest.
"Bwoody awful."
Stifling a laugh, I looked up at Wesley and Marilee. Seems they've all been hearing a few things maybe they shouldn't. "Y-yeah, we should probably go," I said at Wesley's change of subject.
"Can we stay here?"
Here? As in my office here? It wasn't that I didn't trust the two of them, but it was just that.. here? Clearing my throat, I nodded when Wesley decided against the staying here.
Nodding to the both of them, I followed Wesley to the door. Let's hope that this person is Lorne otherwise there will be a lot of explaining to do.
Angel was a dog? I had to fight to keep the amused look off my face, folded my arms across my chest as I listened. Hey, after years of being compared to Lassie (thanks Fred), a car (even better, Angel... dumbass) I was so very much liking the fact that Angel was getting compared to a dog.
"Well he does have that sniffing thing," I offered helpfully, right around the time Angel shot me the Momma of all glares. "What?"
"Yes, why don't I run over and use my 'special talent' to sniff Lorne or whoever he is. We don't sniff, we sense,"
"Excuse me, but I remember the sniffing of my hair incident, pal." I told him, laughing, "Remember? The day when you thought abandoning all concept of personal bubbles would be fun?" Yeah, I remembered that... Come to think of it, it wasn't long afterwards when Angel got weird and all off-the-rails guy - something I should look out for if he started sniffing again.
"Bwoody awful."
"It was bwoody awful," I told her, grinning, avoiding Wes' sharp gaze. What? It wasn't like it was me who came out with the litany of British curses, was it?
When we'd established that the kids really couldn't stay in Angel's office, we were heading out, going to see what the what was with this human Lorne. "Is he pretty?" I asked, the question popping out of my mouth the minute I thought of it. "'Cause, y'know, he wasn't exactly ugly when he was a dem-- Uh, green. When he was green."
It was very hard not to snort at Angel's rather indignant response. Especially if one considers that both Marilee and Alicia seemed very amused by his reaction. My grin faded when Cordelia made *her* remark though. And just when I was about to correct Marilee. Shooting her a sharp glare, I followed Angel out the room.
I lifted Marilee up again. It would seem all she needed to do was stand in front of me, look sad and lift up her arms. I'd automatically picked her up and carried her around. Seriously though, a five year old should be able to walk. I'm not going to admit it, but they've go me wrapped around their little finger. Both of them. Most of the times. I was quite capable of putting my foot down when needed.
Alicia was going back to school for example next week.
Speaking of Alicia.
"He's cute!" She nodded at Cordelia.
She'd somewhere along the line taken hold of Cordy's hand. Probably admiring the nails again. I got the feeling I'd be forced to wave nailpolish around. I don't think so, she can do that herself.
"And pwettyful," Marilee agreed, her arms clutched around my neck. She was still disappointed that she'd not gotten to see the green man.
"He had nice eyes," Alicia continued, swinging Cordy and her own arm back and forth. "He was mad cuz we messed up his mirror though," she added quietly.
"That's not your fault, Alicia," I assured her. "And it wasn't really that bad." I paused, and frowned, sharing a look with Angel when I heard angry voices around the corner.
Fred and Lilah, it seemed. And for some reason I didn't think the children should really see this. Maybe Cordy would...
"Cordy, would you..." I walked over to her with Marilee, trying to hand the girl over to her while nodding in the direction of the voices.
Shooting Cordelia a look for a moment, I huffed and brought down my hands stuffing them in my pockets. That happened to be an entirely different circumstance where I'd been sleeping a little too much and had a certain blonde vampire on my brain. That was a completely different circumstance than this.
"That was different," I said quietly. Finally we started out of the office after discussing my personal sniffing habits and started towards Lorne's office where supposedly he was and not some imposter.
Frowning, I turned toward the voices that seemed to be growing louder by the moment. Was that Fred and-.. Lilah? Well, that couldn't go well no matter how nice they pretended to be towards each other. Wesley seemed to be hearing the same voices I did when I noticed him handing Marilee over to Cordy. They must've been really loud if I wasn't the only one to hear them going at it.
Once Wesley was gone around the corner, I looked at Cordy who now had one child in her arms and the other holding her hand while looking after where uncle Wesley was running off to.
As I looked past Cordelia, I saw Willow sitting in a chair close to Harmony's desk. Suddenly, I remembered the email I'd gotten from her a while back. I'd meant to talk to her about that, but with Cordelia coming back and the children, frankly I'd forgotten.
"Cordelia.. I.. do you mind if I meet you and Wesley up in Lorne's office a little later?." If he survives the catfight he's about to walk into. I looked at her again. "I won't be long. There's just someone I need to talk with," I said nodding to Willow.
Sighing, I looked at Wesley as he tried to hand me Marilee, Fred and Lilah going at it at the other end of the corridor. "Yeah, sure... Just call me Cordelia: Babysitter Extraordinaire."
At least I liked these kids, I thought, grinning at Marilee as my other hand squeezed Alicia's.
"Not a baby," Marilee reminded me solemnly, giving a shake of her little head.
"Course not, sweetie," I smiled, "Now--"
"Cordelia.. I.. do you mind if I meet you and Wesley up in Lorne's office a little later?. I won't be long. There's just someone I need to talk with,"
Sighing, I glanced at Willow. She looked like she could use the company, frankly, and it wasn't as if I was lacking. "Sure, go on." I murmured, pinning Angel's gaze with my own, "Maybe you'll get at least a little bit further than we've got."
Okay, so that really wasn't fair. We had a situation here - what with Lorne and Wes and the kids and-- And we were really kind of just floating around, not getting anywhere, weren't we?
"Go on, shoo," I told him, waving him off with a nod in Willow's direction, "We'll talk later." Maybe at a point where I could say that I loved the big lunkhead without fear of leashing, like, armageddon or whatever.
I turned to the girls once Angel had walked away, smiled, and lowered my voice conspiratorally, "Who's for ice cream?"
"I remember. I remember saying those things, but that's the abridged version. I was angry. Angry at you for not letting us know sooner about what the visions were really doing to you and angry at the Powers for being the ones who were killing you. Killing you.
