For starts, don't I say DON'T ask the clerk and say is for a girl in this case. There's a generic "girl" and "boy" presents and you seem to get a little more personal than that, huh?
Then... you can clue me in what she enjoys or easier what she doesn't, so we can strike down options.

...she likes to take care of others and rarely gets things for herself. I am trying to think of something that isn't very expensive because she'd freak if it was but would come in useful for her that she'd want but not want to spend the money on herself...

You could have made her something if you had more time. But okay...no expensive. A bicycle would probably helped her but that is expensive and I don't know if she knows how to ride one.

Why don't you try something simple? Like a scarf, a scarf long enough to warm two people.
