Slowly Gil left the lab. This night had been hell. He hadn't been able to solve the murder he had been working on and now dayshift was working it.
Nick had called in sick, something which worried him immensely for he knew that the young man had a good health.
Catherine had called him an 'insensitiv old bastard', though he still wasn't quite sure why.
Sara had hunted him down again and even managed to get an invitation for a breakfast.
Now he felt old, broken and lonely. He only wanted to go home, close the door and forget everything.

Gil winced when he heard Sara's voice, almost shrill with excitement.
"Ready for what?"
Gil relaxed. Nicky. He turned around and smiled at the Texan. "Breakfast. Wanna join us?" The question was out before he could stop it. He could hear Sara's barely suppressed growl, but kept his eyes fixated on Nick's dark ones.
The answering smile he got from him was as blinding as the sun over the desert, and Nick nodded. "Sure. Love to."
Gil quickly turned around before Sara could react and question him. Well, maybe this breakfast wouldn't be so bad after all.

Gil was deadly tired when he came home from his shift. It had been a terrible night. Two young women had been murdured by a schizophrenic classmate who had insistet on 'doing what the voices told him'. It had touched Gil deeply. Cases like these always made him doubt humanity.
The whole condo was dark, except for one light coming from the bedroom.
Nicky.
A smile crept over Gil's face and could feel himself relax. Nick always kept a little light burning for him. Somehow he had become a light in Gil's life. The only light that kept him going.

Gil was in a dark mood, hiding in his office all night. And if he came out, the whole lab tried to avoid him.
Catherine tried to talk to him. Three minutes later she left his office, closing the door behind her with a loud bang.
Sara was next. Two minutes and she stormed out of his office, tears in her eyes.
It was Nick who finally cleared the front. He walked into the office, kissed Gil deeply, and murmured "Behave...or this won't be happening a long time!"
With that he left.
Gil's mood was much brighter after that.

He could've lost Nick today.
It would've destroyed him. Whenever he closed his eyes, he could see him ... the bandages around his hand, the cut on his forehead. He'd tried to suppress his feelings but after putting Nicky in his guestroom, he had stared into his mirror and had lost it.
"Gris, you okay? God, you're bleeding. Let me help you."
It was after all the tenderness in that voice that shattered him completely. He broke down in Nick's arms.
