When they first said, "don't judge a book by it's cover," it's possible they were referring to Elena Gilbert.
Elena Gilbert is the queen of Robert E. Lee High, or she might as well be. She’s the girl every girl wants to be and every guy wants to be with. The one that takes an extra amount time in the mirror, the one who’s quick thinking and can get whatever she wants.
Some might call her spoiled, others might say she’s a bitch, shallow and selfish. For the most part she is all of the above. This is very present early on in the series in the way she handles her personal relationships. With Bonnie and Meredith it comes off like she just has them to do her dirty work, more like minions than friends. This also includes her ex-boyfriend Matt Honeycutt who she basically tells that they’re no longer dating, using choice words and sugar coating it. Her friendship with him doesn’t stop there though because he still has feelings for her and she knows that and uses it to her advantage. Through this behavior Elena had gained the nickname of “Ice Princess” because she can come off as cold toward others.
Even though her actions toward people she cares for are rather harsh. Elena is a caring person. It’s just not easy to see it though. She loves her close friends and family and would do anything to protect them from any sort of danger. This side of her is shown later on in the books at first little by little, since she’s more obsessed with her reparation. It’s explained that she, through hints and small happenings, is as loyal to her friends as they are to her. Not only is her loyalty extended to Bonnie and Meredith but to Matt as wall since she does care for him, like a brother. This loyalty to her friends is shown when she chooses to sacrifice herself to stop Katherine from doing them harm. It’s needless to say that she would die for them.
It’s no secret that Elena is a strong willed person. This maybe do to having lost her parents at an early age and having to deal with it on her own. It’s often said throughout the series that this is what attracts Stefan toward her. Because unlike Katherine she isn’t frail, docile, or delicate. She has a mind of her own and knows how use it to get what she wants. Elena uses this will to get her hands on Stefan. At first just using her ordinary high school antics to try and get his attention. Which it does, although he chooses to stay away from her, ultimately he does come around when she ends up in trouble.
As the series progresses along with her relationship with Stefan Salvatore, Elena’s cold hard bitch persona begins to fade but never completely goes away. Being with Stefan has had a positive effect on her, making her more open and affectionate. In truth being with Stefan has improved her, made her more of an actual likable person without changing her completely. Although this relationship has changed her for the better it does have its flaws. Elena is too emotionally, physically and mentally dependent on Stefan. This is quite clear when, only after about a day into the relationship, she tells Stefan that she loves and can’t be without him.
Her intelligence is questionable. Elena is described as being very smart and her methods of using people to her advantage could be proof of that. But she seems to be failing in one or two of her senior classes. As stated by Mr. Tanner, she is failing history but this could be from lack of interest. Showing that Elena learns more from doing then being told or reading from a book.
If someone were to judge Elena on her looks alone they would be surprised at her true nature. Her best friend Bonnie said it best when she wrote: She wasn't a saint. She wasn't always sweet and good and honest and agreeable. But she was strong and loving and loyal to her friends, and in the end she did the most unselfish thing anybody could do. Even though she isn’t a lot of things one looks for in the girl next door. Elena still has her redeemable qualities.
Skills/Abilities:
Elena’s skills are mostly ones that she learned in her years being a normal, average human girl. Which means she has a great deal of skill in the art of manipulation. Nothing too big just things she can do to get her way. One way she does this is by making people think they thought of an idea she has subtly lead them to. Another is by flirting, this mostly works with boys; with a few bats of her eyes and a small smirk here and there she can get a guy to do whatever she wants him to. This sort of small manipulation comes easy to her.
In her vampire form Elena had learned all the basic vampire abilities. She could move faster than she could before, this includes running faster than any car. Elena had abnormal human strength, along with the power of communicating through thought to other vampires. But her life as a member of the undead was cut short before she could learn anymore of her new found powers.
The vampire powers she has yet to learn include; changing form, weather manipulation, Dream manipulation and the ability to compel humans.
It’s no secret that her weakness is her family and friends. Having already lost her parents in a car accident, Elena wouldn’t be able to handle losing anyone else. When they’re put in danger she’ll do whatever it takes to make sure they’re protected. She’ll even go as far as to come back from the dead, which she has twice.
First Person Sample:
[There‘s the sound of someone’s footsteps on the dock. ] That's right, you leave! [It‘s a girl‘s voice shouting at the ferryman as he departs.] Tell Katherine if she lays a finger on Stefan or Damon.. I-I’ll rip her head off myself! [The footsteps grow nearer and nearer before it sounds like the device is being picked up.]
What is this? Where.. Am I? [her voice sounds horse.] Oh, Stefan.. I hope you and the others are all right. Oh, Bonnie.. Meredith.. [She's wondering if they‘ve been devoured by dogs yet or not.] I swear…
If Katherine hurts them or Margaret, I'll make sure she's crucified. [She sighs.] What is this thing anyway? A remote..[She’s messing with it and suddenly her face is viewable. ] or maybe not.. Hello? [Maybe it’s a communication device.]
Is this like a walkie-talkie?
Third Person Sample:
Dear Diary,
Elena stared at the blank page in her diary, she didn’t know what to write. There was so much that had happened and so much that was going to happen. How do I even start? She thought as her eyes lifted the white owl that had perched itself in the barn. The bird had been here before, had sat in that spot and stared down her. Why? “Go away!” Elena yelled in a frustrated growl and the owl did nothing but tilt it’s head to the side as if it were taunting her.
The barn door opened the bird finally took flight as the visitor began to step in, the loose hay crunching under the weight as they approached. “Writing all you’re hopes for tonight in that little book of yours, Elena?” Elena turned her head slightly at the sound of Damon’s voice but didn’t bother turning so that she could see him. The older Salvatore had a way of speaking her name that seemed to send chills down her spine.
“Hello, Damon,” her words were short, not drawn out like his. What did he want? To talk over tonight? Where was Stefan? It didn’t take him long to reach her with that smug smirk on his lips. He took a seat on a bale of hay and looked down to her with an arched eyebrow.
Sighing she closed the empty page in her dairy and set it beside her on the floor. “You don’t sound too pleased to see me.” Damon’s words made Elena roll her eyes and shake her head as she stared off to the opening of the barn.
Her gaze focused on the snow as she thought of something to say. What is there to say? “Tonight’s the winter dance.” Elena finally spoke forcing herself to look into his night black eyes. There was something about those eyes, but she couldn’t put a finger on it. “The other power is sure to be there,” she offered a small smile as stared at his fine features that both he and his brother shared.
Damon shrugged as he leaned back on the bale of hay with the look of thought written on his face. “Most likely.” He said as he stood up, extended a hand to her, which she took, and stood from her seated position on the floor.
In truth Damon had been the more willing of the two Salvatore brothers to work together on stopping this Power. He was willing to put whatever he had with his brother had aside to help and that’s what made him a good friend. “Damon,” Elena said softly with her head hung low at first and then picked it up with a smirk of her own. “Thank you.” She placed a hand on his shoulder to show that she was sincere. It was the look on his face that caught her guard. His brows arched and he shoved her hand from his shoulder with ease.
“For what? You think I’m doing this for you?” There it was, that mask again. The one he wore back at the church, the one he always wore to hide any emotion. Of course he's doing this for me. Elena thought as she shook her head when she slowly backed away.
Why did he do that? She asked herself as she crossed her arms in front of her chest. “I know you are.” Elena said in a matter-of-factly tone of voice. “Because that’s what friends do for each other.” Did he honestly expect her to believe that he suddenly cared about Fell’s Church?
Damon’s smirk returned to his face, except this one seemed to darken his features. “I’m doing this because, whatever it is that’s here is obviously trying to get my attention.” He took a few steps toward her with his hands in his pockets. There was a look in his eye, like that of a crow spotting its prey.
“Damon..” Elena gave an exhausted grunt as he started to close the gap between them. “You’re my friend and I care about you,” she said as he closed in. Did he have to do this now? She ran her tongue across her teeth as his warm breath brushed against her face. “But that’s all we are is friends. My heart belongs to Stefan.” She could see the expression on his face change as his little brother’s name slipped through her lips.
He was now looming over her, one hand caressed her cheek as the other wrapped itself around her waist. “Are you sure about that?” He whispered as he peered down on her like a crow that was now toying with its still living meal. Elena raised her hand and aimed for his face but his hand caught hers in mid-air and kept it there as she tensed up. “Tell me that you didn’t feel anything when you were sucking on my wrist,” he leaned in a little closer.
Elena’s eyes were on his as she pulled her hand from his grip. “No.” Her response was breathy as she went back to that night he threatened the life of her little sister if she didn’t do as he asked. “I didn’t.” Her head was shaking as she put a hand between them, trying to pull herself away from him. Was this some kind of game to him? Damon made her want to slap him one minute and the next, made her want to kiss him and sometimes she wanted to do both at the same time. For whatever reason he raised something in her, something that she couldn’t explain but it had been there since they first met in the gym of Robert E. Lee High.
“Really?” He said, bringing his hand to the back of her neck. “I know what was going through your mind.” He whispered as he brought himself even closer. Elena’s breaths grew short and hesitant since his lips were only inches from hers.
“Elena!?” The barn door was open and in its archway stood a curly haired redhead with a dumbstruck look on her face and her hands on her hips. Elena pulled herself away from Damon’s hold and crossed her arms again against her chest. What was that about? Why couldn’t she just pull herself from him before? She could feel her face grow red as it flushed from embarrassment.
