Summary : Winona always thought she knew the path her life was going to take, but it seems every time she turns around something happens to show her just how wrong she is. This is the love story of Winona and George, but it's also the love story of Winona and Starfleet, and the story of how Winona learned things about herself she never knew she needed to learn. This is the story of a smart and determined girl, the stubborn farmer's son who made her fall for him, the ways they changed each other and the dreams they had of changing the world.
A/Ns : This fic is my 2010 offering for startrekbigbang. It's been almost a year in the making, and has become something entirely different than what I originally set out to write. I plan to do a DVD commentary on it at some point, but until then, a couple of notes.
- the movie credits list Frank as "Uncle Frank", which made me latch onto the idea of Frank as Winona's brother; but in the end the idea that her brother would happen to live in Riverside without them having grown up there seemed far-fetched. but still : that is why he is Uncle Frank.
- in my head, Anna looks like Carrie Rodriguez, Rob looks like Matthew Goode, Jon looks like Andrew Lincoln, and Tommy looks like Michael Trucco. Tiberius looks like my grandfather. :D
- This takes place in the same 'verse as my reboot of the TOS ep 'Arena', but you absolutely don't have to read the other to read this; in fact this is sort of a narration of the three-and-change decades leading up to Arena, lol.
- Huge thanks to stripedpetunia, raindissolved and sekala for beta duties, especially mer for signing on at the last minute. You guys are fucking rock stars and I love you all to death.
- I was lucky enough to be paired with truly talented people for my art and mix. shingo_the_pest and crediniaeth, you guys are the best. Thank you so much for putting up with my vaguery and random spats of being AWOL from the internet, and for the absolutely amazing creations you made to accompany my story, I cannot thank you enough. It really means the world to me.
- I have to thank where_no_woman for this fic even existing, because without the list of quotes about traveling i would never have gotten this far. Also, that comm is a huge part of the reason I found myself with such a drive to write Winona, and a huge part of the reason I love this fandom so much. More women in sci-fi, please, now and always.
- The title is from a Marcel Proust quote. "The true voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new places, but in having new eyes."
