for the most part i've been silently watching the horrible disaster of hurrican katrina. yes politics of it all is totally fucked but instead of just complaining and monitoring -- do what you can to help.

i looked up ASPCA and Best Friends Animal Society (thanks chris! - i didn't know about them) and just decided to give $50 to both. if anything ever happened to my home, the first thing i would grab is Mage.
i saw the vet that stayed with the pets their owners had entrusted to him. six days without food before someone finally rescued them from the flooded hospital. there's lots more on the Best Friends site.
this one broke my heart:
These animals only have days at most, and are clinging to life. They are the forgotten ones. They’re emaciated, starved, dehydrated. Literally “water water everywhere and not a drop to drink.”
