Matt was warm, and distinctly comfortable, like she had her own personal hot water bottle staving off the winter cold. A soft pleased noise escaped her throat as nuzzled her head closer into soft hair, must have a furry cover on it or something. Either way the source warmth was comfortable enough to leave her trying to hold off on waking properly for that little bit longer, been a while since she'd slept as well as this.

Eventually though the pull to open her eyes and wake up won and Matt could only let out a protesting yawn... and get a mouthful of blonde hair for a struggle. After a very undiginified seperation of hair from mouth the redhead looked down at the offending head in question and came to a sudden sharp realisation.

She was cuddling, cuddling with with Mello, a female Mello to be precise, and she wasn't sure whether that made the situation better or worse. More awkward certainly but... they hadn't fallen asleep like this had they? Matt remembered they'd ended up sitting and talking together a few hours after they went to bed, and there'd been a bit of hugging on her part when Mello got upset, but cuddling to sleep... no she didn't remember that.

They'd obviously done it in their sleep, obviously, that had to be it. And now... now how to extract herself from the (rather comfortable) cuddling position without waking Mello and causing more awkward-ness.

Something caught the corner of her eye as she was pondering this, and Matt glanced round to find herself meeting the gaze of her male twin, the girl gaped for a moment, her face turning very red as she struggled to find something to say. before he made any assumptions of any kind, or amybe that was too late already.

It was warm . . . and comfortable. And soft, too. So very soft. And it was comfortable. Someone else was in bed with her, too, but she didn't ache as she did when that normally happened nor did she have her back directly against the wall like she did when things like that happened, so it must have been . . .

"Near . . . " she mumbled sleepily, just loud enough for her companion to hear, pulling that softness just a little closer to herself. Something felt off, but she wasn't awake enough to really tell at this point. And if Near had climbed into bed with her for whatever reason, he probably wouldn't mind if she took a few minutes to wake up.

This was nice, for once. Was she not allowed to enjoy something nice for a few minutes?

Human eyebrows could only raise so much, and Matt was fairly sure that he had them raised as high as they could go when greeted with the combined visuals of his sorta-twin-sis's 'deer in the headlights' stare and miss Mello's more intensified cuddling [not to mention that the name 'Near' was what fell from her lips--]. Had they... had they done something? That didn't seem quite right, but well... girls were close, he knew, but he never figured that they cuddled as they slept at sleepovers. But that didn't necessarily mean that anything like-... like THAT had happened, of course.

Okay, this was a bit much to absorb. And his sis had pretty much caught him, so there would be no denying that he'd seen this. Matt pursed his lips a little more tightly, pinching his smouldering cigarette brutally between his lips...

Matt raised his hand and made a thumbs-up gesture, wobbling it from the 'positive' to the 'negative' position as he shrugged vaguely and bared his teeth in a sort-of grin, brow furrowing now, doing his best to obviously pantomime his confusion about whether or not he should be cheering his sis on in her love affairs or... or helping pry her free of Mello's grip, he didn't know what.

The attempted game of charades left Matt staring at her twin like he was mad, trying to figure out what he was getting at and why the hell he didn't just say it while continuing to try and fight off her own blush. Only made harder when Mello tightened her grip around her and snuggled closer, it was almost touching really, that Mello was happy to cuddle up to her like that, not that she knew she was doing it but still.

Staring at the male Matt mouthed her confusion at him, lips carefully forming the word 'what?'. Oh God he was really thinking... didn't he notice that she was wearing clothes?! Well... there was a blanket in the way, okay she'd let him off on that one but why did his mind automatically go that way? Was it a guy thing? Two girls hugging instantly mean they'd-

Her thoughts cut off as Mello mouthed that name, any good feelings about this where immediately washed away in the face of confusion, indignation and a resigned irritation. Right. Mello was perfectly free to cuddle her, even to mistake her for her own Matt who had died, but most definately not Near, she wouldn't have that. Matt set about trying to extract herself from Mello's grip with a scowl.

It was hard work, and she wasn't sure she'd manage it without waking her up, especially given how one of her arms had ended up pinned under Mello (she wondered why she couldn't feel it) and Mello was holding onto her so tight.

There was some squirming and part of her wondered if it was because Near was uncomfortable with her holding onto him and . . . and did he get taller all of a sudden? And . . . curvier . . .

With a small groan as the squirming got uncomfortable, she opened her eyes blearily . . .

. . . before sitting up in shock at the sight of the redhead with her - or attempting to since one of her arms was under the other girl. It took her a moment to remember where she was . . . and what she'd said and . . .

Mello could feel her face growing warm at both what she said and what she knew had spurred it and she finally managed to sit up properly, pressing herself against the wall and giving both a sheepish grin at that and hoping against hope neither one would ask questions. She really didn't want to explain that. She really didn't.

Okay, so it was a 'get me out of Mello's grip' kind of situation at hand... That cleared-up some concerns and a whole mess of nervous questions in Matt's brain, but he couldn't make it to the bed before Mello herself sat-up and freed herself from Matt's intimate, cuddling embrace.

Nobody was saying anything, and the air in his bedroom was getting thicker and thicker with unease, the hum of the computers around them deadening in the face of such a... fucking awkward bit of silence.

"-... u-uh..." Matt cleared his throat... then peeled his lips back in a bright and utterly forced grin, scratching at the nape of his neck nervously. "--Well, good morning ladies! Did you sleep well?" All three of them HAD to know how weird this was, and even though playing dumb was the absolute least effective strategy to use against ANY Wammy kid... Matt was about 90% certain that the three of them would prefer not to talk about this.

Well, at least they had their clothes on, and despite all of the allure generally associated with the notion of two gorgeous ladies going at it in his bed... Matt was grateful, deeply grateful, that he would be able to live another day without any sordid mental visuals of the two girls' sex lives. He liked Matt so much as a sister, and Mello was hot, but also Mello, which made it more than awkward and... kind of gross, in a way. Or not 'gross' so much as... well, Matt didn't feel comfortable with it was all.

And finally the name 'Near' registered completely, and Matt decided that that was best swept under the conversational carpet until later as well. He valued his teeth, after all.

As soon as Mello let go Matt sat bolt upright and turned her head away, staring across the room for a long moment and inching across the bed to put some distance between them. Not that it seemed to be needed given Mello had much the same idea by the look of things.

Really the cuddling she could deal with and even enjoy, being thought of as Near however... it just struck a bad chord with her. Probably why she was as eager as the other Matt to jump into the distraction tactics, "Morning." She mumbled, reaching up and rubbing her eyes with one hand, the other she was still trying to get feeling back into, pins and needles rushing up and down it unpleasantly.

"Yeah, slept um, very well." She nodded, not lying about that, once they'd basically talked themselves into falling asleep that was. Scratching the back of her head she pulled back the blanket and went to set her feet on the floor, jumping back with almost comical quickness at how cool the air was outside the blankets. Okay, she couldn't stay in bed forever though, so did it again but more slowly.

Feet on the ground she took a moment to remember where the bathroom was before standing up, crossing her arms against the chill and unconciously standing on her toes, rubbing her feet together, "I'm er... just going to nip to the bathroom." She informed with a quick nod, before heading for the door.

Distraction. Good. Changed the subject. Avoided the subject. Probably a good thing since she'd probably never get a chance to see that version of the brat again and why was she so weird about this whole thing?

"Y-Yeah," she answered to the male Matt's question and then shot a glare at the female Matt's back as she left. Mello could understand the discomfort, but to leave her alone with the male one after what she figured out last night?!

She should have expected it. She'd have done the same thing.

Reaching out to pull up the blanket so she could cover herself up a bit. She knew she bore a strong resemblance to a guy friend of his, he didn't need to get a good look at her in her night clothes, thank you very much.

"So . . . uhhh . . . how about you? You sleep well?" she asked, laughing a little nervously herself.

Matt opened his mouth as if to speak and closed his lips again to prevent the cigarette from leaving his mouth, looking after his sis somewhat mournfully. Leaving him to the wolves, was she? Ohh, sis, how could you?! --Matt had to suck it up, though, glancing over towards Mello and... well, averting his eyes again, not wanting to make this situation even more awkward by giving her ample chest more than a passing glance.

Male hormones couldn't exactly be turned-off, but Mello was the very DEFINITION of off-limits and Matt didn't have any intention of challenging that fact. She was hot, but she was Mello and that was just... wrong.

"I slept alight..." He chuckled nervously, removing his cigarette from his lips and dipping towards his desk to tap-off the long tube of ash at the end of it, still scratching at his neck nervously with the other hand. "My back sorta' hurts and the living room windows need a towel over then or something, but..." He glanced over towards Mello, brows knitted-up slightly...

"Um-..." He glanced towards the door, then back towards Mello. "I-... I figure NONE of us wanna' talk about it, but-... you okay?" Things were really awkward now, and whether it was the 'Near' comment or the cuddling his sis or something else, Matt didn't like it being so tense like this. "Just wanna' clear the air, y'know, things feel too weird."

"Th-that's good," she answered, pulling the blanket up to her neck then. She didn't have an 'ample' chest, per se, but given the fact she was wearing a thin night shirt with no support and was currently in his bed and . . . yeah. Awkward. Add to that how he'd found them and then the name she'd said on top of the conversation topics from last night with his sort-of sister. It was . . . weird.

Mello nodded as he answered her question, then went quiet again as he asked her if she was okay or not.

"F-fine," she stuttered, "Just . . . weird. That's all."

She sighed and leaned her head back against the wall as she spoke.

"This whole thing is kind of fucked up."

"No objections on that one." Matt pulled the rolling chair out from under his desk and settled into the beaten-up leather of it, putting his cigarette between his lips just long enough to take a good, deep drag before removing it and breathing out slowly, the nicotine soothing and calming him despite his continuing awareness of how weird things were.

"It's... it's not just that you're a chick, it's that you're technically someone I know and- not him, all at once, and the same for me- I'm not YOURS and that's gotta' be... damn weird and awful." Matt shook his head and frowned, reaching a hand up to massage at his temple slightly. He didn't have a headache yet, but he hated stressful shit...

"There's a whole different set of life experiences and personal preferences and feelings to figure-out here. I feel like we should just play 20 questions until we exhaust ourselves."

Mello wanted a chocolate bar. Or anything in her stomach, really. It wasn't fair Matt had his morning cigarette already, but she wasn't getting out of bed with a guy present. He may have been Matt, but he wasn't her Matt who she had wound up being comfortable enough around to walk around topless (and her face burned as she remembered the revelation from last night and how that might not have been a good idea in retrospect) while she'd been healing from her burns and most shirts just irritated the ones on her arm and shoulder.

"I know . . ." she said, glancing at a point just to the side of his head, "Part of the reason I punched you, actually. I was pissed at him for getting himself killed when he said he'd meet up with me after the Job, and then I saw you and I . . . "

She sighed. Dammit, Matt always had been the calm rational one. She knew she could be, too, but she always wound up letting her emotions and pride get away from her. She didn't want to do that here.

"We might need some beer to go with that game," she offered with a firm nod.

"Beer and 20 questions seems as good a solution as any to this 'getting to know each other' business." Matt murmured softly, still trying to determine exactly how he should respond to the commentary involving her Matt's death. That was still pretty unnerving, and she was obviously still in mourning and the subject was tender... Matt's head was tilted back and his hand was over his eyes, but if he'd been looking he couldn't possibly have missed her avoidance of his gaze. Matt wasn't as good as Mello and Near in many respects... but he was damn good at observation, and he could be very perceptive when he paid attention to something.

"...It's not my place. I mean, I've had a pretty tame life, and maybe my perspective's really skewed here, but-..." Matt licked his lips nervously, then removed his hand from his eyes and looked at Mello, not meeting her gaze for undependable reasons.

"...I can't imagine regretting it, if I died being part of something great. I mean, I.." Matt scratched at his neck again, sure that he was being terrible here and casting his eyes down to the floor and the gadgets laying there, swallowing thickly. He was being dumb, he'd get a kick in the teeth for sure-

"--Look, just don't be sad. Alright? It's no good, you being so sad. I can't imagine any version of me that had any kind of friendship with you would ever want you to be sad over-... it."

Damn it all to hell, why did this guy have to sound so much and say things she knew the dork would say? It just made the guilt eat at her even more. She had a hard enough time dealing with all the other people whose blood she had on her hands on most days, this was just the one that really struck her directly. This was one she had planned for him to survive and where she was supposed to be in danger of dying. He'd depended on her and she'd let him down. The whole thing had been her fault.

And then . . . what she'd figured out last night. If the pattern between her own World and the female Matt's held up, that was.

She looked him in the face, then: "He wanted to ask me out after it was over. I might have said yes."

Matt paused... then lifted his chin and stared at her, completely dumbfounded and silent for a long, unsteady moment. He stared at her face, and she stared back, and Matt was... well, speechless. Luckily. he had always been one to force himself through that kind of thing.

"Well-..." Matt bit his lip momentarily, then stuck his cigarette between them and took a moment of silent solace in inhaling deeply, averting his eyes and breathing out slowly so that the smoke drifted up in wisps over his face, giving him as much time as possible to collect his thoughts before he tentatively resumed eye contact with Mello.

"...That's not fair." There was no tactful response to that because... really, it WAS, and mourning it seemed only appropriate. "Man... that's really not fair!"

...But still. Whether some cosmic entity thought it was funny to make any version of him fall in love with any version of Mello or not, Matts were still Matts. Matts should be decent, nice-guy types, and decent nice guy-types didn't like to see girls being sad. He just needed to find a way to do that for her...

"I know," she answered simply.

The ultimate unfairness of it all was that she didn't see it until it was too late and now she'd have to spend the rest of her life wondering about 'what if?' What if she'd noticed sooner? What if the plan succeeded and he did get a chance to ask her out? What if this and what if that and Mello knew she tended to over-think and put too much stock into things that ultimately weren't of any consequence in the near-future.

She leaned her head back against the wall again, eyes on the ceiling now, trying to figure out what to say next when she remembered how much of a nice guy the dork was and an uneasy idea settled into her head. He wouldn't . . .

Better nip that in the bud on the off chance he decided to try it out.

"Don't try to be him, okay? That'd hurt more than how much you two are like him."
