Oh, Lj. How I love thee.

So, for a while Lj and I were in a fight.
But now we're best-ies again since I managed to make my journal look fantastic!
At least, I think it's fantastic and that's really all that counts. There are still issues with the friends page; I can't use disjointed on the friends page since it doesn't display icons and what's the point of nicole having a billion icons if I can't see them? I have learned more about the things you can do with Lj than is really proper.

In New Zealand events:
Thursday was a "dinner" that was sponsored by the group at this place called The Wine Cellar. Except you can't call some cheese, small pieces of toast, and olives dinner. Needless to say, everyone was whinging about it. The other BU sponsored events we've gone on have all been really good, so I don't know what was up with that. Emily, Meirav and I went to Subway, and despite the huge blister on my foot from my mary janes, it was still a fun time.

Friday was the Harbour Cruise. Let's just say most people were referring to it as the Booze Cruise, and that there was a guy walking around naked towards the end of the evening. No, he wasn't part of the BU group. No, I don't know who he is (but he got named Naked Guy for what I hope are obvious reasons). No, I don't have pictures. There was a fight when we got off the boat because some guy threw Naked Guy's shorts off the boat and into the harbour. After, the cruise Emily, Meirav and I went to Esquires (kind of like Starbucks, but a bit more food) and there was an inordinante amount of food eaten. Meat pies and muffins are quickly becoming a 219 favourite. Going back to the cruise, the harbour was nice, but Sydney Harbour has got Auckland Harbour beat. Sorry, City of Sails, better luck in the daytime.

Tonight we went to the finals of Flip the Script, which is a contest for play wrights who are twenty-one or younger. They write a five minute scene that gets read along with five others in a heat and the winner of that heat moves on to the final. There were 24 plays total so there were four finalists tonight. The four final scenes had been extended from five minutes to ten, and the actors had received the new scripts this morning. It reminded me of Combat Theatre. And because I'm lazy I'm just going to C&P the conversation I had with Nick about it:
**-additional Sarah thoughts.

theeggnogfairy: the first one was really trite
theeggnogfairy: and slightly unclear, but even then it was still bad
theeggnogfairy: I mean this guy is upset over the death(?) of his brother/child/dog(?) and he's talking about how metal and gems are cold and unfeeling *he's on his way to commit suicide, but has to come back to the bus stop because the prostitute has his poison. He doesn't kill himself because he sees his ex-girlfriend at the bus stop waiting for him. No, there was NO OTHER REASON given.*
theeggnogfairy: not exactly original
theeggnogfairy: there was a prostitute in the scene that was hilarious though *I was sad that the play wasn't written better simply because that character deserved better. She was pithy and fresh while the other two were flat, superficial reiterations of emotional situations that were banal the first time around.*
theeggnogfairy: the second scene was better
theeggnogfairy: it was about this woman who was doing weird things in her sleep
theeggnogfairy: and then you find out it's because of subliminal messages in tapes her husband gave her
Rides4130: that's creepy
theeggnogfairy: yeah, but it was funny
theeggnogfairy: it was pretty good except for the part where you're supposed to see her sleep walking *the dialouge just didn't work*
Rides4130: haha
theeggnogfairy: the third one was also pretty confusing in that you knew it was based on a family splitting apart
theeggnogfairy: and you eventually figured out that despite what the mom told the daughter about the dad, it's really the mom leaving the two of them
Rides4130: that sounds interesting at least
theeggnogfairy: it was
theeggnogfairy: it was pretty well written
theeggnogfairy: it's just.. the staging was.... god..... it was bad *now, I realize that after LLL I'm the last person who should be talking about a director's inability to stage, but this was beyond painful to watch.*
Rides4130: well it's a staged reading
theeggnogfairy: *shrug* the other three weren't as bad
theeggnogfairy: the last one
theeggnogfairy: which is the one that won
theeggnogfairy: was this surreal comedy about the main character (called the main character) of a play who gets swept into the margins when the director spills coffee on the script
Rides4130: that sounds interesting
theeggnogfairy: it was
theeggnogfairy: it was creative and *witty. You could feel that the audience was behind this one from the very start.* theeggnogfairy: and you could tell that the actors were into it as well *I think the four actors they had (they acted in all the plays apparently) were more comedic/improv actors. For the most part they nailed all the comedy, but it was the drama that made them choke. This piece was an out there, physical comedy and you could tell they were in their element*

Anyway, it's sleep time. Oh, and this picture is from Christchurch.

/Put it in a can, I'm done
