i got a small 8 gallon tank for christmas and was very excited to go
get some fish. i have taken care of dogs, cows, horses, sheep, goats,
various birds, my sister's turtles and a couple of snakes but never any
fish. being the novice aquarist, i relied on the shop keeper to tell me
which fish go with what and how to set up the tank. my tank has built
in filter system a black background and lining. syempre. so i wanted
really brightly colored fish and nothing else. i wanted a modern zen
thing. apparently, di pala pwede. fish need hiding places. (duh!)
so i set up the tank, conditioned the water and all that, while
scouting for appropriate fish. i wanted angelfish but the shop keeper
didn't recommend them for a beginner. i considered dwarf gouramis which
are nicely colored but eventually ended up with 2 funny looking fish
called blood parrot cichlids. they look like comical gold fish and have
no tail, hence, they're also known as heart parrots. aside from them, i
picked up 3 electric yellow african cichlids (they were not as
expensive as they sound), one of which upped and died about a week
after i put them in the tank.
since i wanted everything in black, i put in some black stones,
thinking they'd be easier to clean and would look nice. they did look
nice but would weigh all the gunk down. yuck. so i changed that to
many-colored pebbles, which are working out well and look nice too.
upon researching the blood parrot cichlid, i found out that MY FISH ARE
FRANKENSTEIN FISH!!!! completely man-made ergo wala silang scientific
name at natural conditions. plus, apparently, most of them are dyed to
give them the bright orange color. (they also come in purple, blue,
black, and i just saw some really fucked up ones that had three colored
bars along the side and cherry red lips. betty boop baga.)
another horrible thing i discovered, because mine have no tails,
apparently, they cut them off when they're babies! ack! para daw heart
shaped. cute daw. LINTEK! i have mutants!
a perfect example of takaw-mata folks. shoulda read up, woulda bought something else, coulda not contributed to the continuity of this awful process.
too late now right? alangan naman pakainin ko sila sa pusa. as hard as
it was, tanggap ko na na manster ang mga isda ko. they are funny though
and not as agressive as the yellow ones.
the yellow ones naman are really pretty and are not man-made. since one
died, the two that were left have since gone on to develope very
distinct personalities... i have really agressive bully who has taken
over the parrot's cave and a perpetually stressed out one who has black
circles around its eyes. mukha syang adik. so yan na ang pangalan nya.
si adik at si tado.
the blood parrots have been named snip and snap, since they have no tails.
and, the most recent addition, a tiny albino corydora (a kind of
catfish) that will help keep the tank clean. he's freaky because he's
an albino but i've grown quite fond of it. i hope tado does not kill
him. his name is snowflake.
i've been obsessed with this whole fish thing, it's a whole new world
(...a wondrous place i never knew...) and it's fun figuring things out.
i now want a bigger tank so i can have bigger, funkier- looking
catfish. pero saka na yun.
next on my list, should any of the current ones die... black and red
swordtails! or powder blue gouramis! or a whole bunch of mollies!
ps. if you're buying fish or know of anyone buying fish, DON"T BUY THE DYED ONES!!!! once the dyeing stops, the killing can too.
