the things i said

my sissy got married today. i wrote my speech this morning while i was getting my hair done. it goes a little something like this:

"my whole life i've been part of a twosome. our family was split into "the little ones" and "hajnal and csilla." i was half of a pair; it was part of my identity. it worked well for me: i have a hard time remembering things; hajnal never forgot even the smallest detail. i'm shy around new people; hajnal gladly shared our stories for me. she gave me advice and i always followed her lead (in some areas, like fashion, i sometimes wish i hadn't.....). since my earliest days she was my protector, my confidant, my big sister.

"as the years went by i had to replace the words "big sister" with "older sister," since she hasn't been bigger than me for a long time now. we went away to college, met new people, made new friends. gradually a new partnership came into the picture: the hajnal and chris partnership. after meeting chris it soon became clear that this would last: he understood and truly loved the silliness that is hajnal. they were natural together and i was glad to see my sister so happy with someone.

"i'm not saying that hajnal and i are no longer a twosome. in fact, my mom confessed, embarassed, that she began to write "hajnal and csilla" instead of "hajnal and chris" on the mezeskalacs she was decorating.....more than once. however, it's comforting to know that my other half has someone as great as chris with whom she can spend the rest of her life."
