((mafia essay))
In camp, I hesitate to really say one way or another whether Ryuuken would actually mafia for anyone or not. In Bleach 241, he tells Isshin that Uryuu living or dying is up to him as is his choice to fight. Now, I think the situation in camp is a bit different, because with Uryuu, he can fight and defend himself. Ryuuken doesn’t have to worry about that. With everyone else, they’re normal human beings with no real special powers or abilities.
People without abilities:
Sohma family - Ryuuken kind of looks out for the Sohmas. This all started when Uotani ex-virus'd into Kureno and Ryuuken found out that the Sohmas were cursed. Kureno asked Ryuuken if he would watch over them, making sure their curse stays secret, keeping them out of trouble, or at least trying to. Stuff like that. So far Ryuuken has only done this twice. Once when Kyon was harassing Kisa and the other was when Mizumachi hugged Ritsu on the roof.
Rikuou - He is the closest person to Ryuuken in camp. I hesitate to use the words “best friend,” but Rikuou’s pretty darn close. He’s the person Rikuou trusts most at camp and is the most comfortable with. Now, Rikuou DOES have the breaking things with his mind thing, but to what extent can he use it, I don’t think anyone really knows. That, and I doubt Rikuou would ever use it to actually harm someone, let alone kill them. Needless to say, if that sort of situation arose, Ryuuken would be able to jump in before any of that would be necessary. So far, there hasn’t really been one. And if there has, I wasn’t around for it.
Cher - She’s like a daughter to him. And she has no offensive fighting skills or even defensive skills. So when there’s a situation, he tries to be around so that he can make sure she’s safe. This has happened twice. Once during Bleach weekend and once during Demon weekend. Both times, he stuck around the hospital near the forest to make sure she was all right.
Tam family - Now, River doesn’t really need a mafia because she can fuck up an entire room full of reavers and walk out without a scratch. Simon on the other hand, not so much. So it’s more saving Simon to keep River from going batshit. That, and River helps keep Ryuuken semi-sane. And if River were ever in a position where she couldn’t fight or defend herself, Ryuuken would be there because that situation would just be BAD. Ryuuken’s mafia’d for the Tams once, when Simon was attacked by radical religious zombies.
Watanuki - I’m not exactly sure why or how it started, but Ryuuken just can’t seem to leave Watanuki alone. For all intents and purposes, he’s just a normal human kid. He knows that Watanuki isn’t going to live very long so while he’s at camp, he wants to at least make sure that he stays safe and healthy. He kind of watches the kid’s back and makes sure he doesn’t get into too much trouble. He’s tried getting rid of the spirits that haunt Watanuki once. And after the fiasco with Ichigo and Watanuki in the closet, he’ll be keeping a closer eye on him.
People with abilities: This is an “I’ve got your back when you’re fucked and in a corner with a broken-ass sword and are about to die” kind of thing.
Itachi/Neji - They don’t really need a mafia because they can fuck shit up very easily on their own, but in the case that something unlikely happens, Ryuuken would be there to watch their backs.
Shinigami - As of right now, Rryuuken would mafia for Yachiru. He would also back up Ikkaku (although now things are kind of . . . well) and Soi Fong, if they needed it. The others are on their own.
Uryuu - . . .

Haruhi doesn't really need to mafia for anyone, because almost everyone Haruhi talks to can kick ass in one way or another. Neji's a freaking ninja. Roxas, Axel and Sora can fuck shit up. Roy's the Flame Alchemist. Hatsuharu, well, he has Black Haru. And Wolfwood has his crazy ass Cross thing. So right now, there's Akiha. Haruhi can and will kick someone's ass if they fuck with him. There's also Franz. ♥

In D.Gray-man, Kanda tells Allen that sacrifices are necessary. He also tells him that he won't save his sorry ass if he gets into trouble and can't get out. Of course, he contradicts this a few chapters later by saving Allen's life. So Kanda will step in to mafia for his fellow exorcists. In camp, no one as of yet. List of potentials are Panthera, Itachi and Lina.
