To say that it had been a tumultuous year was an understatement; rough, brutal, and interminable were all equally appropriate terms to describe the preceding months. It seemed Lisbon had spent even less time relaxing and having fun than usual. She made it a point to keep in touch with her brothers as much as possible, of course, but it wasn't unusual for weeks to pass between them without communication whatsoever. There'd been relatively little time spent with the few close friends she had, though. And it wasn't the sort of thing she'd admit to easily, but she missed the company.
Deep down, she was a lonely person, committed to her job, to putting away bad guys. But she was human, too, and her heart wasn't so completely walled-off that she couldn't acknowledge to herself that she wanted companionship. If she stopped, if she was alone in the silence of her austere apartment, then the loneliness would all but overwhelm her. So she lived for the job, stayed late at the office, and tried to occupy her time on the weekends as best she could.
One person with whom she'd found a connection was Nicki, the deputy AG they found themselves frequently working with. There'd been a time when they saw each other with relative frequency. They'd even been...intimate, though Lisbon tried to keep herself detached emotionally, not wanting to let herself get too close to someone who might not want to stick around.
But she couldn't help missing her now. It had been too long since they'd spent any time together outside of work.
It was Friday, and dark outside. She should be home, but something was keeping her from just spending another night plopped down on the couch catching up on her TiVo. She turned the cellphone over in her hands, then finally flipped it open, scrolling down her list of contacts until she got to the one she wanted.
Patiently, she waited for the other woman to answer the phone.
