A friend just messaged me today because her sister got a new betta and she wanted some advice on the setup and asked me because she remembered that I was talking about it a while back. It's been a couple of years since I set up for a betta and, I lost Bill a few months after getting him. Part of the problem was the fact that, despite researching heavily, some of the information I found wasn't completely accurate. For instance, I was doing fewer water changes and I think that contributed to Bill's problems, so I'm a little wary of giving advice beyond the basics.
The other issue is that I'm not entirely sure how much time and money her sister wants to put into the effort and even if she did, there's not a good aquarium or pet store around and most of her purchases will have to be from a big box store or online. To put it bluntly, I'm trying to figure out how to triage the advice to most benefit the fish. I'd like to present her with all the options and say "Here's the ideal set up for a betta and if you're willing to do it, this is the best situation, but if you can't, this is critical, this is important, and this is just a good thing to do."
So any good advice to pass on?
