NYC, Day 1: Van Gogh, Picasso, meteos and dinos

Jul 09, 2010 02:10

First off, before I forget: HAPPY BIRTHDAY CONNY!!! I wish you all the best, &hearts.

New York is busy, noisy and sticky. It's so different from Montreal, and exactly the kind of get-away that I needed.

I arrived late but safe this morning around 8:30. Boarding the night bus was a pain in the ass, but the actual trip itself was more than tolerable. Morning NYC traffic was killer, though.

After arriving, I miraculously managed to remember how to use the subway system here and followed aeroport_li's instructions to get to her place. There, I dropped off my luggage and caught the next train back into the city along with Li, her room ate and roughly ten thousand other commuters. And then I went off playing tourist by myself.

I dodged rain, had Starbucks like a good New Yorker and walked some sixty-five blocks from Union Square to Central Park. Along the way, I fell in love with the MoMA, failed to blend in with a Mexican group of tourists, dozed off during the Planetarium show at the Natural Museum of History and took a million pictures of paintings and dinosaurs.

Li and I then met up for drinks Downtown, I bought my ideal summer straw Panama hat from a street vendor and we had dinner back in Brooklyn. As of now, I'm currently typing from her couch, stealing her air conditioning and borrowing her iPad. (Heatwave=not awesome; iPad=muy awesome.)

All in all, it's been a hell of a 24 hours. If it keeps going like this, who knows, maybe I'll just be able to mend my poor teamgeist-broken heart in time to catch the final on Sunday...
