Earth-shattering observations about my present state:
- I am at work.
- I do not want to be at work.
- I want the boyfriend (who got a haircut, btw, so now it's like petting soft fuzzy blondness!) to download the rest of the Dr. Who episodes so we can watch them together and revel in its awesomeness
- I really don't feel like being at work
- I would much rather go home and prepare to attend the sister's best friend's grandmother's funeral. (Speaking of the sister, she used up all the hot water yesterday washing her hair so I had to take a cold shower. Not fun.)
- Yeah, I really, really don't want to be at work.
To top it all off, I'm going through Merlin!fic-withdrawal. The fandom has now been invaded by the teenyboppers/ff.net/can't-write-sex-scenes-so-please-stop-trying crowd. Ugh, do not want. Thank Paolo that there are still brilliant authors who regularly churn out fantastic material. Unfortunately, a lot of my favorite WIP's (which usually happen to be AUs) are...well, in progress. Oh, what I wouldn't give for a few updates!
Drastically Redefining Protocol by rageprufrock
The motherlode of all Merlin AU fics, in which Arthur is a modern-day Prince of Wales, Merlin is a chain-smoking medical intern, there are paparazzi chases and beautiful lovin' all-around. Brilliant beyond words.
A Step to the Left by greensilver
Girl!Merlin-verse, in which Merlin is...a girl and the story unfolds as per the episodes. Except that, Merlin's a girl. Court intrigues, political plottings and a beautiful exploration of the consequences of a Crown Prince falling for a servant girl who also happens to be a sorcerer. The sad part? Only one more chapther left. *lip quiver*

In which Merlin is a Vegas magician and Gwen his assistant. Very cute and sweet. Valiant made his debut...is it too much to hope for Lancelot to show up one day?
We're A Storm In Someone Else's Teacup by paperclipbitch
In which Merlin goes to a meeting for people with superpowers, meets Morgana, and proceeds to save Arthur's life. Gwen is awesome, Lance(lot) is hot, and Will is a sweetheart. A fic that'll make you laugh, cry and squee with glee.
London Calling by velocitykills
Another modern-day AU in which an eternally young Merlin encounters the hard-boiled Lieutenant Arthur Pendridge, the reincarnation of everybody's favorite royal blond prat. Merlin's internal narration is hilarious, and the fic flows beautifully.
Not Even Slightly Dickensian by little_giddy
In which there are murder stories-writers, thieves posing as artists (or the other way around?), and princes trying to pass off as common folk. And the style! Somewhere between Dickensian and Harlequin, which is a very, very good thing in fandom.
Be Resigned by franticsga
Meterologists-in-the-US-airforce!AU. It took me a while to get into this, but once I did, I became utterly absorbed by the entire military way of life. You can really tell that the author was there and worked as a meterologist in the US airforce, because the world she creates is so damn tangible. Oh yeah, and the boys get sent off to Iraq.
Easy There by syllic
An (intentionally) cliche-filled fic about the esteemed tradition of the rowing sport at Oxford. Very fun, very immersing and awfully informative!
A Thousand Keys by saucery
Merlin and Arthur get banished from Camelot's time and space by Nimueh, ending up in present-day England. Only since Arthur never united Albion, there's no such thing as England. An adventure in the making!
