Really Here Now, Entry 6

Sep 11, 2005 02:13

I've decided that this entry will be simply a summary of my day, as today was the first time that I felt like I was actually back at school and that everything was about to start. first of all, the reason caleb and I got to move in early is that we are in this housing office program called "orange cap," which basically involves an early move-in date and some good food in exchange for helping the freshman move into their dorms on two different dates. lucky them, by the way. it took me forever and a few minutes to move in my freshman year, but we basically can unpack a big hulking SUV in about a zillionth of that time. the major drawback to this program though is that I had to wake up at 6:50 twice in one week. which I seriously have not done since high school. I don't think. and being eternally clever, I decided that going out the night before was a grand old plan. (side note: all of my awesome roommates are finally here! yay! our common room looks sick nasty and will look even more so once we finish decorating) I let allison, who had just gotten back from seven days in the woods with the more adventurous freshman, talk me into going to the street. I only went to a couple of the clubs, tower for a bit and terrace for literally ten seconds. then my feet started to hurt so I walked back to foulke (my dorm -- hoorah for junior slums), but then I heard all this noise coming across the quad. I am a huge tool so I actually followed the noise and found a triangle party! I got fairly pounced on when I walked in, which was somewhat fun. I also got to spend much time with jeff, who I hadn't seen in forever. so all in all, it was a fun night.

the only problem was that I got back to my room around 2:00 am. which wouldn't be that late (note: how I was the first one of my roommates back by a long shot), except for that whole 6:50 wake up thing. well, I managed to drag myself out of bed this morning. but I looked like I hadn't slept at all. plus the required orange polo shirt and sexy housing office baseball cap majorly didn't help the cause. but the other kids working today were pretty cool. they were mostly sophomores, which oddly enough made me feel slightly old and slightly more wise. it also gave me mixed feelings about no longer being in my residential college, despite the utter lack of aesthetic value in all the butler college buildings. the other downside to not living in butler is that annie is no longer easily accesible for obsessing, chattering, and/or making fun of stuff. this is seriously problematic. (on a side note: this incredibly annoying thing happened a few times during move-in: fathers took one look at me and assumed that I couldn't carry anything remotely heavy. I unloaded one car along with this pretty slight junior guy. the father shook the guy's hand very politely and ignored me entirely, except to say, "here is a nice light one for you." okay, I realize that I am not tall nor am I insanely buff. but no way would I sign up for this if I couldn't carry a freaking suitcase! argh!) but the day improved dramatically when I let alex adam kidnap me for awhile. we went to zorba's, caught up, and ate breakfast food at about one in the afternoon. I can always tell when I am back on the princeton campus because my whole day gets thrown off by about six hours.

anyway, I eventually got a guilt complex and went back to moving in the freshman. I got asked for directions a lot, which was sort of embarassing mainly because I have no clue where anything is in rocky college. between the up-campus location and all the construction last year, I was in rocky a grand total of never. after I finished with orange cap, I went to dillon for awhile and then dropped in on the beginning of our rehearsal for tiger night (aka: the time when all the arts groups try to woo the freshman with performances that involve creative talent and blatent sex in some interconnected way -- that is the unofficial purpose of course). PUP is doing an excerpt from "the fantasticks" ... what else but the rape song? but hearing dan sing those first crazy sets of notes really brought me back to the end of last year. I got a serious attack of both nostalgia for reunions and excitement for this fall. to recap, "the fantasticks" really was a great experience. it certainly involved one of the better casts I have ever worked with here. considering that I did around 11 shows last year, that is saying something. but later on, caleb and cate and I had a fun adventure trying to load the set into matthews for our freshman week cabaret show. for some reason, my prox doesn't work on 185 yet. thus caleb had to wait for someone to open the door, call me, make me sit in the lobby while he went to the armory and got some set pieces, and then have me open up the building from the inside. we resolved this before the second armory run, but then the trio had the wonderous experience of carrying a huge A-frame ladder and two-way mirror up-campus. whose idea was it to build princeton on a huge hill? I feel like more intelligent decisions have been made.

after our excursion, we went to frist for food. just sitting there with the two of them, after doing some slightly ridiculous task on behalf of PUP, definitely made me feel as though the year had started. primarily because I know that many similar episodes will soon follow. after the frist run, I planned to crash. but instead, I went to dinner again with ronee (my awesome "secret garden" co-director this fall) and some of her music friends. I actually didn't know most of them well, but they were a lot of fun. another very typical college experience: skipping some meals and then having others twice, not actually to eat, but to socialize for way too long. on the way back, ronee and I stopped at theatre intime and ran into a number of great people. plenty of "how was your summer" exchanges occured, but none of them annoyingly formulaic thank god.

finally I got back to my room. about four hours after I intended to do so. I chilled out, watched some "law and order," and then decided to conk out. one problem: someone closed the door to the girls' bathroom on our floor. and I have yet to find anyone who knows the code that you need to get in the door. I went to the other one I knew of, but there was a super drunk guy throwing up in there. hoorah for saturday nights. I actually found a third, which I was a bit proud of, but it was also locked. then, I thought I heard someone inside. I almost knocked. however, I first listened more closely to the noises from within ... please draw your own inevitable conclusion from here. needless to say, I left. in the end, I stole nicole's flipflops and walked to another dorm. once there, I wandered around until I finally found an open bathroom. this will admittedly make a very good story, but I think I will pass on repeating the experience. if possible.

my day tomorrow is delightfully free. I plan to do all the sleeping I missed last night and maybe catch up on some PUP business. definitely looking forward to the start of classes because virtually everything I am taking sounds fantastic. plus, in some fun cases, I know almost everyone in my sections (certainly the case in advanced creative writing). good night all!

JULIA :)
