“Good evening.”

Daniels looked up from his drink into the pleasant, smiling face of a Suliban. He’d just got off work, his second day on his first really major assignment, Captain Jonathan Archer.

He raised his eyebrows. “Hi,” he said.

“My name is Silik,” the newcomer said, sliding neatly onto the barstool next to him. “I understand you’re my opposite number on the Archer case. Daniels, isn’t it?”

Daniels blinked. “You - what?”

Silik smiled pleasantly. “I believe we’ll be seeing a good deal of each other, yes?”

“You’re … you’re from …”

“Oh, yes,” Silik said calmly. “Let me buy you a drink.”

“I’m not going to tell you anything,” Daniels pointed out amicably. “If you’re looking to interrogate me, your methods are a little odd.”

“Oh, no. Nothing business-related at all. This is an amiable drink between new acquaintances.” Silik lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “I *never* take business home at the end of the day.”

“Oh,” Daniels said. “Good.”

One drink came in almost a dozen glasses. Silik was much less indulgent, although the glint in his eyes suggested that he found Daniels’s drinking amusing.

“Let me take you home,” Silik said. It didn’t seem to be a request.

It was a quick walk to Daniels’s sparse apartment. An operative needed not to have too many material things around.

“I’d like to kiss you,” Silik remarked casually as they reached the front door.

Daniels blinked. “Now?”

Silik nodded. “Yes.”

His mouth was rough and tasted of expensive whiskey.
