HAVE SOME MORE SPAM.
"Civil Defense" has got to be one of my favorite episodes of DS9 ever. I remember in college putting it on loop in the background at one point when I was studying so that I could look up at any point in the afternoon and encounter awesome, and this rewatch is not disappointing me.
I love that Jadzia is actually shaken when her hands are zapped. I think there's this idea that badass people take unexpected injuries in stride and I think that it actually weakens their ability to be sympathetic a lot. Jadzia was working on a conduit and all of a sudden ZAP and there's second-degree burns on her hands. I think that that is totally an occasion where you go OH FUCK.
I love how Kira shoots everything. My favorite part is probably when she aims the phaser at the door panel that Julian is leaning on. Admittedly she told him to move, but her solution being SHOOT IT. It's great.
I also love team Sisko and O'Brien being creative and resourceful and engineery.
And the writers have figured out that the best way to derive awesome from an episode is to stick Odo and Quark into a small space and let them bitch at each other the entire time.
And Julian perched leaning at Garak's side watching him work and wearing an expression of fond possessiveness. And then flirting. FLIRTING HORRIBLY.
AND GARAK. AND GARAK AND DUKAT.
And of course Dukat showing up and smugging all over ops while everyone is hiding under tables and behind consoles. Smirking about and ordering random tea and sleazing at Kira and THEN he's fucked along with everyone else and has to eat his words.
"Garak! Groveling in a corner! That alone makes my trip worthwhile."
And they bitch at each other like they have had the WORST BREAKUP IN HISTORY and then Kira's like CAN YOU SETTLE THIS LATER?
BUT ESPECIALLY GARAK BITCHING OUT DUKAT OVER KIRA. And how APPALLED Dukat is when Garak puts such a CRIMP IN HIS STYLE.
I love the Sisko-O'Brien Dad patrol.
And Odo and Quark. "I thought we were going to die. I was trying to be nice."
