back on the bicycle

Tomorrow, according to sg_fignewton, is Stargate Gen Fic Day.

It’s also a fine day for me, because it’s the day I’ll be posting something new! After what was, for me, a long enough dry spell to make me very nervous, I’ve written almost 8000 words in the last ten days! Tomorrow’s Alphabet Soup will include a drabble of mine, and Part One of a new short story. Part Two will probably be finished in about another week; total word count is likely to be 10-12k.

It’s been a lovely opportunity to practice with the character voices of the SG-1 team, as well as giving me a chance to play with a couple of other things I’d wanted to try someday. But most of all, it’s a huge relief to be getting something out of the keyboard. I know that dry spells are legion in fandom, and three months is nothing to what a lot of my friends have gone through. But the writing is still so very new for me, and so very cherished. I can’t keep from nearly constant anxiety that it could go away as swiftly and suddenly as it arrived, and not come back, and leave me bereft in a much greyer world.

Once done with the current piece, I know I have to dive right back in on something else, even if it seems to be crap (and even if it is crap). But I think it will be easier to get myself there now. I didn’t fall off the horse, so it hasn’t been a case of having to get back onto it; and it’s been more like getting back on a bicycle. It really did come back quite quickly once I actually got started. I think the bicycle must have been pointing uphill, though - up a very steep hill. Getting started was a true bitch. Some of the writing has been amazingly fast, though, so I guess the bicycle got to go downhill for at least part of the time.

I can’t reveal anything about the new story, other than what I’ve already said: it’s a MacGyver/SG-1 crossover, and it will be available for your reading pleasure here tomorrow. If this does not please you, then I guess you’ll just have to wait until I start posting pictures of lizards. And camels. I have some pictures of camels also.
